Some of the pro gun lobby in the states are saying it could have been prevented if the teachers were armed

To play devils advocate a little, there is some logic in this.

America is not a civilised country, they have had centuries to prove it and have continually failed,

Any country were it is the right of citizens to have the means legally to have at their disposal enough weaponry to wipe out a class of school kids without trying hard to get the slaying tools is sick from top to bottom.

We can't comprehend the mindset of pro gun lobby in the states. It is deeply ingrained in their culture. For the most part it is distrust and fear that other people may have a gun. The more I learn about American culture the more it seems that they live in fear ad ignorance. Whether it is the threat of communism, socialism, Islam, atheists or liberals, there always seems to be something that they have to fear and a threat to the American way.

Gun ownership in the states is declining; ask about who should own guns and of what type (rather than say, "Do you want the President to stop you owning a gun?") and a majority of both gun owners and non-gun owners favour increased control.

The NRA don't want any new controls as they see it as opening the wedge (crossing the rubicon?).

Many new laws infact make owning guns easier and many states don't require any registration of what you have bought (some states have shredded past records). No one has a clue who owns what.

I know that, and I agree with you. However MM was countering the NRA and gun lobby's standard defense of gun ownership. i.e. If gun ownership was spread wider the 'good' guys with guns would be able to mow down the 'bad' guys with guns before they could do any real harm. That fact that the first victim in this case was armed to the hilt blows that argument right out of the water.

Yes, because everyone who owns a gun is going to "lose the plot" it comes with ownership of a gun.

Was talking amicably enough with an american on facebook the other day. He simply could not comprehend that access to guns was the problem. He repeated the "teachers should have been packing and it would have been stopped" line. This guy isn't an idiot, I've met him several times, he's not gung-ho, but he can't shift from the "right to bear arms" paradigm.

Very sad, but a massive cultural gap lies between us and most americans on this issue.
