The "witness" will be on sick leave before you have time to utter "f***ing plebs" and will retire early on the grounds of ill health with full Police pension.

I am a little confused about the fuss.
Is the main dispute about the words rather than the actions?
I haven't seen anything where Mitchell denies making a fuss for the big gate to be opened, just the manner in which he did it?

Sadly likely to be spot-on.
I always feel sorry for any member of the police force who genuinely retires on the grounds of ill-health.

This seems to be the essence of the story as reported by the Guardian:
The police log has "very similar wording" to two emails sent by a serving officer, who claimed to have witnessed the incident, which were sent to his local MP, John Randall, the deputy chief whip. Randall, who had a strained relationship with Mitchell, handed the emails to No 10 and briefed Mitchell....The police officer has now admitted he was not present.
• The police log and the email claimed the incident was witnessed by several members of the public. CCTV footage of the incident, broadcast on Channel 4 News on Tuesday night, appears to show that only one member of the public stood outside the gate during the incident.
• The police log claimed that Mitchell made his incendiary remarks that police were behaving like "###### plebs" as he wheeled his bike to the side gate after being refused permission to wheel it through the main gate. Davis claims that the CCTV footage, which has no sound and does not show their faces at all times, does not show Mitchell speaking to anyone in this precise period.

However the log suggests a much longer conversation/situation than the CCTV does. (Mitchel refusing to use side gate, repeated requests from the police etc).
Number 10 saw the CCTV and didn't seem to pick up on this. It would appear (my guess) that Mitchell has done a SAR (Subject Access Request) and had a look at the CCTV himself and passed it onto C4.

True. Equally, it's not as straightforward as first thought. It is generally acknowledged by all that the "general public eyewitnesses" were not "general public", were not "eyewitnesses", were not plural and were not there.

Even more bizarre is why a former millionaire banker,wise enough to be involved in tax avoidance and have people vote for him,should resign when he is obviously innocent yet none of the alleged 'fitters up ' have resigned.
Strange indeed.
With all those students,skinheads,motorists,football fans,homosexuals,black people,animal rights activists,people with long hair,those with different accents,terrorists etc. to harrass and 'fit up' what are the fitter -uppers thinking about...

He resigned because no one believed him, the police said he did it, a public witness said he did it, the police fed said he did it, the papers were against him... doesn't matter if you are innocent once you become the story. (in the political world).
