Two big decisions made by the ARLC reacting to problems in recent times.


1.

From the start of the 2013 NRL season, referees will make an on-field call in relation to all try-scoring situations, and if in doubt will signal 'time out' and refer to the video referee.
However the video ref will only change the on-field referees' original decision if there is sufficient evidence to suggest that decision was wrong.

2.

From 2013 no player will be eligible to play for NSW or Queensland unless he has lived in that state before the age of 13, or unless he is the son of an Origin player.
The player must also be eligible to play for Australia.

I guess these will be generally welcomed as they are responses to what some fans saw as outrageous decision in the 2012 NRL season.

Number 2 is still ridiculous.

A kid is born in Fiji, moves to Sydney when he is 10. Can't play for Fiji and NSW, has to declare for Australia if he wants to play SOO

Any 10 year old who moves to a new country and later develops into an international quality athlete is more than entitled to play for their adopted country. It's silly to suggest otherwise - and I doubt there would be any sport in the world with different rules?

This ruling is a huge step forward as many of the overseas players who end up representing Australia because they want to play SOO move to Australia after they are 13 years old.

That's fine, he can do that if he wants, but he should also be allowed to play for his original country if he wants (and play SOO)

State of Origin for Australians only. This isn't something that will ever be changed.

Oh all this will be retrospective - most likely.

They specifically said it's not a retroactive law. Inglis still plays for QLD and Tamou still plays for NSW.

The fact that underneath it all he's a nice guy seems to miss the point of what a role model is.
