Thats what happens in Cricket. Players retire and some become umpires - they know the players / rules / sculduggery etc ... Patten has been out of the Aussie game for a couple of years, so his club loyalties should have diminished a bit? Sounds ok to me.

Henry Perenara played NRL before becoming an NRL Ref too.
Jamie Bloem over here is working his way up the ranks over here as well.
