Could Sheffield not use them being turfed out as a lever to get the council to develop the old ground they used to have? I believe it is still there

Highly unlikely.

It's privately owned and used regularly as a dog track. It's not derelict.

Hillsborough is a sensitive topic in football and in South Yorkshire. The ground could be sold and the government might find some financial support.

Even less likely.

Hillsborough is a well developed ground. Knocking it down and rebuilding it on the Don Valley site makes absolutely no sense.

Government ? Financial support ? Only if some MP slips it on his expenses claim.

The best solution for the Eagles is a guaranteed long term deal to use Bramall Lane for the majority of / all games, with some "on the road" fixtures at suitable venues if absolutely necessary.

Having the Eagles own/maintain a stadium of any size suitable for Super League without any other guaranteed income is probably a recipe for bankruptcy.

Guaranteed ? Long term ?

Won't ever happen. If a new management comes in and wants Eagles out, they'd be out.

Unless Nahaboo buys the stadium for us, obviously.

Erm, RFL should buy it on condition of a small golden goodbye from the council and move a 3g pitch closer, it is an opportunity. Ideas needed !

Bloody awful place to watch Rugby

Did anyone else pick up that the people of Sheffield will still be paying for the 1991 student games in 2024? (From BBC online) I bet they're delighted at that.

Not just Sheffield.- What I did pick up is the value of the site is worth more than whats owing on the stadium.
Carlsberg don't do Soldiers, but if they did, they would probably be Brits.

I would hope so.

Though that obviously depends on planning issues.

I suspect Wiki is out of date as it claims that 'with a view to hosting 2018 World Cup matches' the local council have agreed to invest £22m to increase the capacity.

But even without that the ground is unrecognisable from 1989 - it was upgraded for Euro 96 and still (on the TV at least) looks pretty modern if soul-less. There's no sensitivity about the place in soccer that I'm aware of and I doubt there's any desire from anyone to sell it.

Agree with all that.

It's a property with a specialised nature. Anyone wanting to use it for something else would need to go to the expense of knocking it down. Why would they do that ? The location just isn't special enough.

most wednesday fans would be up in arms if they moved from hillsborough.. especially to the complete other side of the city!

Its one of the plans to cut costs but from what i have heard it is not a done deal as yet that this is one of the "cost cutting" exercises that they are going to go through with .. i would assume that they need the deal to be right otherwise its not worth it..

It's nonsense. They won't move in the foreseeable future.

I just saw a piece of Sky Sports news wher the council have announced their intentions to close Don Valley Stadium as it costs too much to maintain.

Where will this leave Sheffield Eagles. Do they play out of the Don Vally or Bramall lane these days ?
