A photo has been put on the Oldham forum in 'memories'. Is the team in blue Workington? We''ve had barrow, Doncaster and Swinton. Do you recognise the players?

I think this is the right link
https://pbs.twimg.co...ATfJ6.jpg:large

If not, simply copy it and use google (or any other search engine) and it will take you to the portal site. Or simply tap TotalRL.com at the top of this page, enter the site and select Fans Forum, and then find and directly enter the Oldham site. The topic is listed as "Memories". I hope this helps.

We definitely wore the "Romar" strip in 1989 but who are the players, especially the ginger haired winger?

I was thinking the same, look like Weir at 7 there. Looks like Lowden behind the 13 too.

Could the 13 not be Garry Nixon?

13 looks a bit like Joe Sullivan. The blonde running into the line looks like Paul Penrice.

The only ginger winger I can think of from that era is John Beattie but not sure if he was still playing then ? The only other ginger player I can think of from around that time was Barry Buglass but he was a forward not a winger.

I also think no.2 is Penrice.
The player to the left of No.13 looks like Garry Smith.
Not convinced No.13 is Joe Sullivan, he was usually 2nd row?, though it is the right era. Possibly 13 is Garry Nixon.
The players either side of No.7 could be Ian Vannet (on the left) and Peter Riley?

If it helps to jog memories, the full squad for that season was: Ainsworth, Armstrong, Barker, Beattie, Beck, Bower, Brake, Burgess, Dockerty, Falcon, Gorge, Henney, Higgins, Kitchin, Lamb, Law, Little, Lowden, Lynch, McGuirk, McMullen, Matache, Mawson, Newall, Nixon, O'Loughlin, Penman, Penrice, Phillips, Pickering, Riley, Rooney, Smith, Sullivan, Torley, Tubman, Walker and Wear.
There is also a picture of the team in their ROMAR strip on page 270 of the Joe Holliday book - Workington Town RLFC 1945 - 1995.

I see on the barrow forum that JAMES NIXSON as resigned. Apparently saying that he cant get a pass during training let alone in a match. Could he do a job for town. Not a bad winger ???

In 1988/89 we played Oldham away in the Lancashire Cup on 18th Sept and lost 2 - 64. Oldham were in the top division then.
The photo definitely shows player numbers 2, 7, 12 and 13.
The players in those positions for that game were - P Gorge, G Rea, 2nd rows J Sullivan & P Vannet and then M Higgins at 13. I don't think it is that game, though Geoff Rae at number 7 stacks up with the photo having had another look.
In 1989/90 we played Oldham away twice - Aug in the league and lost 8 - 40. Then in Jan in the Challenge Cup and lost 8 - 30.
In Aug 89 the players were - P Penrice, G Burgess, 2nd rows P Riley & I Bower and G Nixon at 13. Penrice at 2 and Nixon at 13 look correct, but not the others? 12 does not look like Riley or Bower.
In Jan 90 the players were - P Gorge, G Burgess, 2nd Rows McMullen & Nixon and Aussie Greg Brake at 13.
In 1990/91 we didn't play Oldham away.
The photo is a decent sunny day with plenty of green grass, so not Jan 90. The Aug 89 game is the most likely?
Team for that day was :
D Lowden
P Penrice
N Rooney (Dans father)
M Mawson
K Tubman
G Smith (he's in the photo to the left of 13, but not were a 6 should be?)
G Burgess
J Sullivan
A Law
C Falcon
I Bower
P Riley
G Nixon
Subs - J Newall & Butch Barker
