Jokes aside, what is someone called if there from Hull or Lincoln or Grimsby or Leeds or Newcastle or Wakefield or Torquay or Edinburgh or Exeter, etc.

And what is the term for these names of "people who come from that place"?!

I found Leeds is Leodensian, although I dunno if it's "official". I'm hoping not to venture into the p"ss-take territory of Jam Eater, Codhead and Scouser etc. though.

Last night I was trying to find what someone from Merthyr Tydfil is called
(and please don't table a suggestion of Dai or Blodwen, thanks very much )

There is a Tydfilian running club but I can't find any other reference.

I come from the village of Garndiffaith and, in common with valley villages throughout Gwent, residents are referred to as being "off" that village. [Actually we are colloquially 'off the Garn')

Torquonian for Torquay, but this isn't a very ancient appellation, Torquay being essentially a 19th century creation. Folk from Exeter are officially Exonian, folk from Plymouth are Plymothians and folk from Newton Abbot are beyond the pale. Cambridge is Cantabrigian, I know. Salopian for Shrewsbury. Birkonian for Birkenhead. Middlesbrovian for smog monsters.

Barrow is Barrovian, Dalton is Daltonian, Ulverston is Ulverstonian' I think Workington is something like Wyrekentonian and I haven't a clue about Whitehaven apart from the derogatory Jam Eaters .

Not entirely.
It's what they are known as down this way, allegedly because part of a skate looks like a ladies *ahem* garden of fun and the sailors used to make do after a few weeks at sea.
Portsmouth residents refer to Southampton as "Scummers" allegedly because the Dockers in Portsmouth went on strike at some point in the distant past and Southampton didn't support them. I believe the more traditional name for People from Southampton is a Sotonian.
