Not sure if this has been mentioned elsewhere, so apologies if it has, but BBC commentator David Oates has died. Enjoyed his commentaries and he was a man with a great deal of passion for RL. Particularly enjoyed the way the he & Stuart Pyke did "two handed commentary" i.e. Oates when one team has the ball, Pyke when the other has it.
Sadly missed. One of the good guys IMHO. RIP.

Rugby League pays tribute to David Oates

The RFL wishes to send its condolences to the family of BBC Radio 5 Live broadcaster David Oates, who passed away last night after a short illness. He was 50.

David Oates was a regular commentator on Rugby League on BBC 5 Live and 5 Live Extra where the lifelong Blackpool fan’s knowledge of, and love for the sport always shone through. He also commentated on a number of Championship matches for Premier Sports.

On behalf of everyone in Rugby League I would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to David’s wife Charlotte and their children at this terrible time,” said RFL Chief Executive Nigel Wood.

“David was not just a friend to the sport, he was a friend to many people at the RFL and we are shocked and saddened by his untimely death.

“As a broadcaster he was the consummate professional: his commentaries were never anything other than accurate, intuitive and knowledgeable.

“As a man, ‘Oatise’ was funny, immensely likeable and thoroughly decent. We are all going to miss him terribly.”

Great bloke, I remember him riding on a London Supporters coach to coach to Hull in the 1990s. he was very knowledgeable about League having been born in Blackpool and supporting Blackpool Borough in his teens. A sad loss.

Very sad news. For all the BBC efforts to conceal the FiveLive radio commentaries or make them a surprise, they're always great value and David was extremely knowledgable. That's no age is it.
Astute analysis from a Wigan fan:

Rumour going around Headingley that Wire will have to play the second half with 12 men.

It seems that they forgot to bring the half time oranges, and Solomona ate Chris Bridge instead.

Don't know why he was hungry, as he looked as though he had eaten the whole youth team before the game started.

Liked his style and he made the game exciting without going over the top. Certainly one of the best Radio Sports Commentators. RIP and thoughts to his family

Dave Woods on Twitter: Best mates, best man. Never happy unless grumpy, funny, generous, no ego. Left us with the best memories. Oatesy, mate, loved you.
