The John Bull in Wigan, well known to quite a few on here is about to undergo a facelift. They are going to re-open the kitchen and extend their real ale range.

Important news, the juke box remains the same.

ah the john bull juke box best in the land, and i hope they don't touch the stag with the spliff in its gob.
actually that would be worse than touching the jukebox.

What does it mean
This tearjerking scene
Beamed into my home
That it moves me so much
Why all the fuss
It's only two humans being.

Oddly enough the first two people I mentioned this to said that they had better not remove the stags head with the spliff.

Always a fan, always a good start to the night before departing to the grimness of king street. Any idea how long it will be shut for?

Only shut weekdays, still open weekends. That's the message I got.

Refurb complete, very sympathetic job done.

Juke box remains the same, moose still got his spliff.

Now 5 hand pumps and promising range of beers.

Shipping in speciality pies from Cumbria served with various chutneys, excellent they are to.

Victoria is now putting in an appearance at weekends, good to see a Burgess behind the bar.

King Street really is a nightmare isn't it. I went on two crawls around the various noise barns, where they sell awful lager, make coversation impossible, and charge you top dollar. I went because I felt it was part of my job to go out with the lads at Christmas and after a Wigan/Warrington July encounte we all went to, but I only did it twice - I haven't the stamina for that sort of thing any more. We never went in a pub with decent ale either time. Not that Wigan's any different in this respect from other towns. I've never crawled Westgate in Wakey but it looks exactly the same as King Street.

Wigan town centre is much improved, with several pubs doing a decent range of cask beers these days. King St. is dying on its @r$£.

The Bull now has 5 hand pumps, the re-opened Raven now has up 8 hand pumps, up from 3 when it first re-opened, Berkley has 5, Little 15 even has 2, Boulevard has a good range and then of course you have The Anvil, Tudor and Royal Oak who all specialise in real ale.

All of them turn out a decent pint.

Is Wigan one of the few towns that still has a brewery in the town centre?

It takes about 2 minutes longer from the Bull to walk to the ground.

Though we would leave at the same time as from The Anvil, as we always leave at the same time, as well you know when you asked the question. :D

AS a real ale fan that's good news, because those other places like Walkabout(?) and the like were really dreadful. As for a brewery, TBH there are plenty of places that now have breweries. The next time you're in Yorkshire I recommend trying Ossett Excelsior. Ossett is a small town, with an amateur RL side Ossett Trinity, I believe they serve Ossett Brewery's products in their bar. Wakefield and Leeds certainly have breweries as does Dewsbury.

Lots of places have breweries Geoff but Wigan has one slap bang in the town centre, do Leeds and Wakefield actually have breweries in the centre of town?

I know Ossett, once had a gang of lads from there sleep on our living room floor one Christmas, they couldn't find my mate they were supposed to be staying with and they found me in, sticking to the thread, the John Bull.

Until recently Wigan had two breweries in the town centre, Mayflower and Allgates, Mayflower has now moved out to larger premises.

Allgates couldn't be more central being alongside the Parish Church.

Re: Breweries in town centres. I'm not sure where these two are now, but they are still, afaik, independent and I am fairly sure they were in town centres: Holts in the Strangeways area of Manchester (never liked their beer, personally) and Robinsons in Stockport (loved their beer; second only to the Boddingtons of old).

Checked up on good old Google. Both still there, right where they belong! :)

The Wakefield Brewery is five minutes walk from Wakefield Cathedral, the Dewsbury one is near the West Riding Refreshment Rooms, not sure where Leeds Brewery is - I suspect it's not in the City centre though.
