Sad news for Barrow - not the strongest runner but you can't beat sheer pace. His seasons outside Bull were great for both of them.

It is hard to believe that James Nixon is still just 23 years old. In 2009, he will be entering his sixth season as a Barrow Raiders player, and already he has racked up over a century of first team appearances and scored a total of 85 tries! Given a good season in 2009, it is not inconceivable that he will score his 100^th first team try for Barrow and, to put that achievement into perspective, only a dozen other players in this book have managed to reach that figure. In 2008, he became the first Barrow player since Bill Burgess in the early 1960s to top the ‘30 tries in a season’ figure, and he looks well capable of one day challenging the club’s ‘tries in a match’ record of six, given the right circumstances. That looked on the cards at Blackpool in 2006 when James scored a hat trick in the opening minutes, in fact he did so before a single opponent had touched the ball other than to kick off. James’ hat-trick that day came in just six minutes, and is the fastest ever by a Barrow player. At the end of the 2008 season, James was courted by Super League club Harlequins, who went as far as making him an offer to join them. Barrow fans were delighted when James turned the London club down and chose to renew his contract with Barrow Raiders yet again. Barrow fans were delighted he stayed, for there is no better sight than James Nixon heading for the try line, leaving the opposition in his wake. I have no doubt that this is a sight we will continue to witness for many years to come. He’s faster than most players in the game (including Super League) and never looks likely to be caught. Rugby League is not the only sport at which James Nixon excels. He is an excellent fly fisherman who, from 1998 to 2002, was a member of the England Youth fly fishing team!
