The sign of a good team is how they respond to a heavy defeat and Oldham's defensive display showed a marked improvement from the opening day defeat to North Wales Crusaders. With only Oldham registered players and loan signing on show for the Roughtyed's they produced a strong team effort to sting the Hornets at the Whitebank Stadium.

Hornets were clear favorites for the win after a convincing opening day thrashing of Gateshead but Oldham made a statement of intent after the first defensive set. The Oldham forwards ran straight with the intention of making hard yards. The half back combination worked effectively with Dally having a very productive display both offensively and defensively.

The opening 15 minutes saw the two teams equally matched, the Oldham forwards pressed the Rochdale defensive line with some strong tackling on display from both sides. Vice Captain Sam Gee crossed the white wash to open the scoring with Dally leaving his kicking boots in the changing rooms, 4 nil.

The match continued as a close fought contest with both teams making unforced and silly handling errors in important areas of the pitch. The merry whistle blower made some usual decisions but it would not be rugby league without a ref's decision that would be more at home in ice hockey.

Oldham started to boss the match and the hard worked from the forwards started to pay off, Oldham moved into the red zone within the 20 meter area of the Rochdale line. The ball was spread wide to Mo Agoro who skipped passed two Rochdale defenders to score in the corner.

Rochdale took advantage of strange refereeing decision to crash over on the right hand side of the Oldham posts.
10 - 4 to Oldham.Half Time.

The second half started well when Hobson scored in the 48th minute ti make the score 14 - 4, Dally missed a difficult conversation.

A series of handling errors and penalties saw Rochdale near to the Oldham try line, Frodsham dived over just to the left of the posts 14 - 10. The game was evenly balanced but Oldham's defensive effort forced Rochdale to kick mainly on the fourth tackle of their offensively sets. The Oldham forwards started to make more yards down the middle of the pitch and the hard worked was awarded when Dally kicked on the last tackle, he followed up his own kick to benefit from some confusion in the Rochdale defense to touch down.

On the 64th minutes Dally threaded a pin point kick into the corner for Dale Bloomfield to touch down. this score sealed the victory for the Roughyeds. Rochdale' Chris Baines left the field injured which meant they played the final moments with 12 players.

Final score 26 -10.

A massive improvement from last week with Oldham being strong on defence and progressive going forward. A disappointing crowd 518 watched a good Oldham performance take the sting out of the Hornets tails.

The Oldham were the stronger team over the 80 minutes and they deserved the three points..I am sure Rochdale will respond the next time both teams meet in the league.

Good Derby Game!

Very good allround performance. Both teams playing with controlled agression. Our forwards were dominating in defence and attack.Completely different attitude and team morale compared to last week. Onwards and upwards. I was particularly impressed with the extra energy and speed demonstrated in the second half playing uphill.

Well done lads

Great report thanks - illness has prevented me from attending lately but I am impressed with the coaches response to defeat and how he picked "Oldham squad players" to make amends for last week. A really good team response. I remember Fordy in charge at Fev and getting a towelling only for the return game at Spotland turning out to be a cracker when we nilled em and one of the twins was sent off - happy days. Can we do the same to a very good Crusaders side? Hope to be there for the next game. Well done lads.

Were in complete control throughout the game and really could have scored more points. Half backs both played well especially Dallimore who was my MOTM. Crowley had another stormer and the rest of the pack combined well. Thought Bloomfield had another terrible game though and will be lucky to keep his place in the team.

Rochdale were very average and didn't pose much of a threat

Great result and terrific performance in difficult conditions from all 17 today ...just what was needed after last week . Special mentions go to -

Mo Agoro - thought he had his best game so far - rock solid under the high ball , ran the ball out strongly and took his try with some style.

Dally - starting to look more and more like the player who ran the show in his first season for the reserves.

Josh Crowley - put in another impressive stint today - what a grafter.

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

You are right BR. It was a great result and should be celebrated. The team selection also demonstrated Scott Naylor's determination to do things his way, which also flies in the face of some of the knockers. We should be paying credit where it is due and last Sunday it was great to beat the old enemy for a second time with such a postive attitude. Well done the Yeds!!!!

You are right it was a good win that deserves full credit, but do you not think in face of the knockers last week which were all about the use of DR players and the team disruption, that the coach took notice and reverted back to the lads who had served us so well in the two friendlies.

Also BR's quote about the number of posts on the two topics does not make sense, again the posts on the Celtic game were mainly about DR disruption to a team who had given their all in the previous friendlies, and there was no reason for complaint after Sundays performance.

Credit to Scott for listening to the knockers and putting things right.

Oldham signed Players playing for Oldham.

Hi higgy, I think he will put DR players in when it suits him to do so. Be that the DR player is better than what we've got or to fill a gap when we have injuries. We only have a squad of 22 or 23 players which is quite small compared with other sides.

Be interesting team selection this weekend....do you change a winning team and risk getting flak if the result isn't as good as expected OR do you use the Gateshead game to try out other playing options? I'd say the latter.

It would be good to play those who have not really featured yet. Give them game time before the league campaign gets underway.

So we have given up on appearing in a Cup Final.A basic goal at the start of this season should have been to win the Northern Rail Bowl and automatic promotion and nothing less after our failures of the previous five seasons. With the promotion of the four strongest sides in the division last year this will be viewed as a massive failure of the club to grasp this opportunity to try to give the long suffering supporters a bit of silverware however insignificant this may seem outside of our division.

Hi D1029,
I think you are making the assumption we will lose with these other players included in the team. Personally I don't expect us to lose against Gateshead with all respect to them. We are talking Phil Joy, Neil Roden, Dave Cookson and Kenny Hughes, all good solid performers. If we lost our chance of the Northern rail bowl, it was against North Wales crusaders.
