Rugby league at its best, when played by footballers, not 21st century robots

Many people today complain that today's top class players play the sport of rugby league like 'robots'. This to me, is a good and simple way to describe how the game has evolved in recent years as more and more influences from our 'awesome' cousins down under enter the game.

Why not take a look at a match I found dating from 1988 when Warrington took on Wigan at Wilderspool in a New Year's Day fixture. Marvel at the wonderful skills desplayed on a wet winter's afternoon by REAL rugby league FOOTBALLERS, not damned Aussie-style-programmed terminators as we tend to see today.

No one is disputing that rugby league was great in the eighties...the sixties...the thirties

I totally disagree that all things aussie are bad though.

I also think players like Roby would still be outstanding in any era

Its also true that in the period of the clip you hsve chosen our sport was overrun with aussies...Halifax had almost a full team


The open play in this game is also in part due to the fact that it was 11 v 11 at one point in no doubt due to the lower levels of discipline and unprofessionalism and without doubt widespread use of anabolic steroids.


However a very enjoyable clip and yes some great rugby league. .the type of attacking play we all love.

Brilliant clip of how rugby should be played 3 ex lions in the warrington side too.
