I do not like alliteration in club names. I also think that clubs could be a little more creative in their choice of monikers.

Anyway:-

I was looking at Widnes' website and apparently they considered becoming Widnes Warriors but the RFL asked them not to because Whitehaven had already baggsied the name. I seem to remember that Whitehaven were briefly "the Warriors" - maybe it was just the one season. Whatever happened to this nickname?

How did Wigan then get the rights to this name? Was it a case of what-Mo-wants-Mo-gets?

The RFL probably asked  the same of Wigan, and they probably said 'no, we want to be called warriors'.. simple as that really. There are no 'rights' to be claimed with a nickname/moniker.

Widnes were always going to be Vikings due to the town's Nordic history.

WIgan were slow to take up the Warriors name and unlike most clubs didn't add it at the start of SL, it was 1997 before they announced the change.

Mo was not even at Wigan when they added the Warriors Tag

Widnes were always going to be Vikings due to the town's Nordic history.

According to their website, they had "Wizards" as their first choice then opted for "Warriors". The club were not even aware of the Nordic history until a schoolgirl made them aware of it.

I think York are more deserving of 'Vikings' tbh.

It's time to park the camels.

There are quite a lot of people in Widnes who are aware of the towns Nordic history, well before the club adopted the name.

They were threatend with a lawsuit. They chose to change it. They could have laughed it off and in all likelihood nothing would have happened but probably (sensibly) thought it not worth the risk. They weren't actually forced to change.

You'd have thought that somebody would have known but I'm just going on what was on their website.

"Why is Napoleon crying ?" said one sailor to the other, "poor ###### thinks he's being exiled to st helens" came the reply.

York very nearly were the Vikings at one point.

The Akkies thing was quite amusing at the time. All good now though. :)
