Leeds Rhinos coach Brian McDermott has been fined £500 by the RFL after he was found guilty of publically criticising the manner in which matches are officiated following his side’s Super League fixture against Catalan Dragons on Monday April 1, 2013.

McDermott was found to be in breach of RFL Operational Rule D1.8 © (prejudicial conduct), Operational Rule D1.10 (i) (public criticism of match officials) and the sport’s Respect Policy.

McDermott was instructed to pay £250 immediately with a further £250 suspended until the end of the 2014 season.

St Helens assistant coach Jamal Lolesi has been fined £500 after the RFL found him guilty of using foul and abusive language towards a match official during a Super League fixture against Salford City Reds on March 22, 2013.

Lolesi, who pleaded guilty to the charge, was deemed to be in breach of Operational Rule D1.8 © (Prejudicial Conduct) and the RFL Respect Policy.

Lolesi was instructed to pay £250 immediately with a further £250 suspended until the end of the 2014 season.

I didn't even know that Lolesi had sworn at a ref.  Glad he's been fined.  I wonder what Brown will get for calling Bentham names last week?

Good. After a few of these in recent weeks I was starting to wonder whether this had become acceptable.

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.

I think the RFL (or whoever disciplines the coaches) is just a bit behind time as in Saints' case the fine was for the Salford match.  Therefore, I would imagine Brown's fine will come along in a couple of weeks.  It should be a big one as well in my view and there should be a couple of other coaches fined too, like Sandercock for example.

Aye, the St Helens incident was 22/03, Leeds was 01/04

Think the fines are too low. You dont have to agree with the match officials but to swaer at tham and criticize them in public really is not on. I am sure a Ref/match official would be more understanding, if a coach asked him why he made these decisions and maybe helped the match official understand why he is upset in a reasonable manner. There is no excuse for the way a number of coaches act

Exactly, and that's not just in SL, the Championship is getting as bad.

Think Brown was way out of line after the Catalans game and should cop a couple of grand. AS for the guy who "coaches" my team, I think he just blames the refs to try to avoid the blame for the team shipping 50 points again! I really wish the RFL had the power to ban him from coaching till the end of the season.

sadly it seems to be creeping into all levels of the game, as a ref in the amateurs I often get abuse from coaches but they very rarely if ever come up to me after the game to ask me to explain decisions.

Maybe there should be a standard punishment when coaches abuse refs, regardless of the level of game?  Docking league points could be a good idea because that will put pressure on the coach to keep their mouth shut: which club or team wants to be knocked down the league, regardless of which league it is?
