All over twitter that Pat Richards will be going back to Aus next year.

http://www.weststige...-Richards/73297

Pat has been the standout player in SL for years and will be a huge loss for Wigan.

If true that will be a huge loss for us. He has won us many games with his goal kicking.

I think he'll probably go down as one of the last stand out Wigan Aussie signings.

Are Wigan going to have any players left?! Seem to be losing a lot of star quality over a two year period!
Last year: Leuluai, Finch, Carmont, Lima, Fielden, Hock (on loan) and a host of youngsters.
Next year: Mossop, Hock (completely), Richards, possibly Tomkins.

They've been pillaged!

Tis true, confirmed on his own twitter feed.

A surprise to me, but it isn't in another way. He's been a really good player for Wigan once he got going, probably Millward's (?) masterstroke.

It should make the Fantasy Leagues a bit more interesting! He's always been the priciest!!

well his contract is up so I guess there was nothing stopping him.

Currently I'm not too worried about next year. Hock has really already gone, Mossop hasn't played much for us this year and we haven't missed him too much, I believe we have some young backs chomping at the bit for a place and a wing spot might break them in to first team rugby quite well.

If Tomkins goes though that will be the huge loss. As I've said before, he's irreplaceable.

Says it all about Wigan when you can lose that many quality players in one season and still be top of the league... and lose more the following year yet still be pretty confident!

At Hull, we nearly had a heart attack when Manu and Moa left!

The Wigan conveyor belt will just find another replacement. It will just mean that youngsters get games which can only be good for our international future. The player drain to Aus could be the best thing to happen for the production of home grown players in SL. Most of the Brazilian football team play abroad and there still up there with the best in the world.

Exactly.

Just means we're gonna struggle in the WCC for a while though!

I agree westhuller, but what it needs is for other clubs to see this as well and make sure they have a youth conveyor belt that works as well. It seems, from press releases this week that Wigan and Leeds are going in different directions with regards to the NRL. Leeds (well Hetherington) have indicated they'll try to keep their youngsters to the ends of their contracts (and good on them) and Wigan have said they'll try and make money out of it by being open to offers (and its difficult to argue that logic in a sport which seems under funded).

Who knows which will turn out to be the better business logic for the next few years.

And if we don't whichever players have a good game will find a contract offer from an NRL club on their door mat the next morning.

Well it is almost certain we will lose Briscoe to Cronulla but then we have just signed Tom Lineham on a long term deal who has the potential to be better than Briscoe. He's bagged plenty of tries already this year. If Leeds can keep hold of Watkins they have done well and by comments on his twitter account he seems happy to stay at Leeds.

the problem I see is that in a couple of years time they'll probably go for Lineham as well if he turns out to be as good as you're indicating. We're going to have to make sure that as much money as possible is reinvested in youth development from these sales.

And you're right well done to Leeds for keeping hold of Watkins.

Good luck to him.  Been a fine player, hope he can stretch out his career in the NRL beyond the 2 year deal.

With regards players going down under, in the article linked in the WCC thread it goes on to mention Wigan having an agreement with Paramatta about U19's spending a year down under, be interesting to see how it unfolds.

He's been a great servant to the club and comes across as a decent bloke. He can go to the newly cashed-up NRL for a generous final contract and I wish him all the best.

Wigan are now just a supply line for the NRL, with full support from the owner.

That's quite a step up from being just a supply line for SuperLeague and Championship clubs.

There is a couple of wingers with great potential coming through in Joe Burgess and Dom Manfredi, the challenge is for them to step next season and beyond.
