Widnes captain expecting tough Cup trial

Widnes captain Jon Clark is warning his team-mates that the Vikings cannot take anything for granted when they play Workington Town in the fifth round of the Tetley’s Challenge Cup at Derwent Park on Sunday (3.00pm).
The Super League club were taken to the wire by fourth round opponents Doncaster before eventually winning 42-28 and Clark says that Widnes cannot afford to get drawn into another battle against Championship opposition.
“I don’t think there’s any room for anyone in the squad to get complacent,” said Clark. “We had a scare last time out against Doncaster and we know Workington will be throwing everything they have at us so we cannot take them lightly.
“They’re a decent side and we’re going up to their home patch in front of their fans and we know it’s not going to be an easy day.
“We know if we let them into the game then their fans will get behind them and we could be in for a tough day. We need to go there and play with confidence and play with focus and if we do that then we should come away with a good win and get ourselves in the hat for the next round.”
With just two victories away from home so far in Super League, Widnes have struggled to find their form outside of the Stobart Stadium but Clark says that won’t come into the equation on Sunday as the Cup is an entirely different proposition.
“Our league form has been up and down all season but that doesn’t count in the Cup,” he said. “We know that we’re only three or four wins away from a chance to play at Wembley.
“Three good games and you could be in the Cup final and that’s the way we need to approach this game.
“I think we have a squad capable of putting together the performances on the day and who knows how far we could go? We’ve got a great blend of experience and some very level-headed young players in the squad who are full of enthusiasm for the game.
“We need to play our hearts out and treat this game like a cup final because from this stage onwards, the pressure just gets hotter and hotter.”

How much interest is this game creating in the town? What are Workington doing to maximise revenue from the game in terms of marketing, corporates, lunches etc? Just hope Town maximise the potential - and it's a good, enjoyable competitive game.

What a stupid comment. Out of 55 available DR places this season (11 games x 5 places) Town have used just 11, so 1 per game on average. Of those 11 appearances, 1 player has made 6 of them (Declan Hulme) who was cover for Elliot Miller during his injury. In 4 of the games Town have used no DR players at all, including last Sunday when Widnes were desperate for us to give 4 players some game time and we turned them down and used our own squad. If that makes us reserves then so be it, but I believe we have used DR correctly and only used young players (Hulme, Gore, Lawton, Davies, Kavanagh) which is how it was originally envisaged.

here here derwent, we use the system as it was originally meant to be, not giving established first teamers game time. and it is also working in reverse with young lads from town being given trials by widnes,

Just wanted to wind people up, and you all took bait like Hungry Salmon. You guy have used the dual reg system as it was meant to be used, unlike Swinton and Hunslet

denis is taking the game seriously and showing town the respect they deserve by picking his strongest available squad. i expect to see the same starting 17 who beat saints last friday.

This game didn't even rate a mention on the BBC red button forum today.    Oh, well, we'll just have make sure we get a mention next round.  Up the Town.

I remember when .............................

"It is impossible not to feel a twinge of sympathy for Workington Town, the fall guys this season for the Super League's determination to retain it's European dimension, in the shape of Paris. While the French have had every assistance to survive, the importance of having a flagship in a heartland area like West Cumbria has been conveniently forgotten." - Dave Hadfield - Independent 25th August 1996.
