I am taking 2 mates to the stoop tomorrow for the Broncos Wigan match.

They have never seen a game of rugby of either code, live or on tv before.

I was looking for a bit of help with 5 of the rules you think will be best to tell them considering some of the rules I still struggle with myself.

The rules only apply to the opposition and not your team.

1) Six tackles before a hand-over of possession

2) The ball must travel backwards relative to the person throwing it

3) A player who tries to catch the ball but spills it forwards has "knocked-on" - scrum to the opposition

4) Try is worth 4, penalty goal 2, conversion 2, drop goal 1

5) A tackle is also complete when the referee calls "held"

If anyone mentions scrums, tell them to think of it like a throw in in football, ie just a restart of play with the non offending side keeping possession.

Other basics can include pointing out that its usually the same guy collecting the ball at a play the ball. Or maybe the very simple offside rule.

I'm sure they'll probably bring the topic up themselves

Why? Its not like they come on here arguing the toss is it? Maybe they will just enjoy the game (or not)

Think it's a nod to the other "What newbies say" thread at the moment

It might sound daft (but hopefully not disrespectful) but it could be worth pointing out Wigan are first and London are thirteenth out of fourteen.

I've always been pulled up on point two. I'm told the rule is that the ball must not travel forwards. Sorry for being a pedant.

This rule does not apply to Wigan, Leeds or Saints  ;)

5 Most Basic Rules for Beginners

1. Last person to sit down get the beers in,

2. All newbies must start the first chant,

3. A hand-me-down rugby shirt must be worn (preferably at least 8 years old),

4. Whoever wears number 1 for the opposing team must be booed throughout the whole game whenever they touch the ball,

5. The first game must be followed by a second, and third, and fourth... forever.

I've taken a few newbies and its usually easier to talk them through it as the games going on.

Just to be clear, you're right. Technically the rules say a forward pass or a knock-on is when you propel the ball towards your opponent's dead ball line.

In those five rules I would replace rules 2 and 3 as

2. You can only kick the ball forward towards your opponent's goal.
3. If you pass or knock the ball forward it is a scrum to the opposition.
