The 2013 MRL Dove Men+Care Championship was launched today ahead of the Cup and Championship fixtures kicking off tomorrow evening (Wednesday 22 May) at the Balzan/Lija Football Ground.

Reigning champions Sliema RL will defend the Championship trophy against the competition of Gozo RL, Malta Origin RL and newcomers Birkirkara RL.

This year’s domestic competition will also feature an elimination Cup within the Championship, an added contest for teams vying for silverware before the summer arrives - when the championship will break before the latter rounds and Championship Final continue in September.

Sliema's recent success in the 15-man code leaves them as arguably the kings of Maltese Rugby and without doubt wanting to continue that dominance in the coming season but Malta Origin RL prop Joe Paolella said today his squad would be all out to claim the silverware from their rivals.

"Malta Origin were title contenders last year and our aim hasn't changed. We're after the silverware as much as any of the other three clubs" said 19-year-old Malta international Paolella.

Sliema halfback Malcolm Attard commented, "Having won the MRL Championship last year in our debut season in rugby league, the team is looking forward to competing once again and carrying on the success being enjoyed in both rugby codes"

Paolella, Sam Keep (Malta Origin RL) and Sliema's John Ellul, Dragan Cerketa and Ed Willis are again expected to feature in this season's MRL Championship after gaining national team selection following stellar performances locally last season.

A British Army infantry, 1 MERCIAN RL, last week confirmed a two match tour of Malta this summer and will take on Gozo RL on July 5 before facing the Malta XIII on July 8 at Hamrun.

Tonight sees 1 Mercian Regt visit the island of Gozo to take on a Gozo select, then on Monday they take on a Malta XIII in Malta.

http://www.malteseru...night-at-sannat

Sannat Football Ground will host the match with kick off scheduled for 8pm and what is expected to be the largest attendance for a rugby league match in Gozo with numbers between one and two hundred.

Gozo Rugby League hosts the first tour match for the visiting British Army regiment that is currently undertaking a training camp on Gozo with a match this evening at Sannat.

Gozo's team will be an Invitational - welcoming players from the Malta XIII that are trialling for places in Monday night's representative match in Malta for the Dove Men+Care Summer Trophy.

The British Army's 1 MERCIAN RL arrived in two groups on Monday and Tuesday respectively - totalling 84 personnel, and come off the back of a 38-0 loss last weekend in England.

The Gozo Invitational will field almost two different squads, with the match being played over four quarters due to the stifling weather conditions that are expected, a Malta XIII squad in the first and third quarters and a Gozo squad in the second and fourth quarters.

Score updates will be provided tonight on our Twitter page at www.twitter.com/maltaRL.

Malta coach Anthony Micallef has named 25 players from the Dove Men+Care Championship in the Malta XIII squad ahead of their clash against the British Army’s 1 MERCIAN next month.

Seven players were named from each of the Birkirkara RL, Malta Origin RL and Sliema RL clubs with Gozo RL contributing four players.

The squad will come together for training ahead of a trial match three days before their July 8 match against the British Army team.

Micallef commended the form of the local clubs and said he was impressed with the level of improvement on the domestic front.

“The players’ education about the game is improving, you can see that from game to game and season to season” said Micallef.

“It’s good to be able to name such a broad number of players for a match of this level. And while myself and Chris (captain and caretaker coach) will have to cut the squad (33 players) down to only 17, it’s a good problem to have”

Micallef, who has been at the helm of the national team for four years, said up to 13 players would be selected for the national XIII from Malta and Gozo.

“We’ve been in touch with our UK and Australian offices and we’re in a position that we can include a couple of new players in our squad thanks to the development systems in place over there. That’s all welcome for what will be a serious test for our domestic squad”

1 MERCIAN are heading to Malta with almost 100 personnel for the week-long tour.

Malta XIII vs 1 MERCIAN RL will be played on Monday 8 July.

Few expected the type of match we experienced on Monday night. An end to end game that had everything from scintillating attack to bruising defence.

Malta didn’t start the way they wanted to with a dropped ball on halfway late in their first set. However the British Mercians dropped the ball in their ensuing set and then gave Malta a piggyback penalty after a strip.

Dual International prop and man of the match Dragan Cerketa didn’t need to be asked twice when given room to move. A 20m run ended in the big man crashing over for a 4-pointer. Kick converted and the Maltese led 6-0.

Malta held the early ascendancy but the Mercians were far from giving up. Drifting to their left edge a chip kick was collected by Jese Kauleta who raced away for the Mercians, levelling the score at 6-6.

But the Brits were their own worst enemies, dropping early ball and allowing Malta to continue pushing forward. The Maltese shifted the ball right and appeared to have the Mercians beaten but some desperate cover defence prevented the try.

1 Mercian then appeared to be in the clear before 16 year old Australian-Maltese backrower Brad Littlefair made the covering tackle. Malta then received a penalty 10 metres out and took the easy two points.

However the Maltese let 1 Mercian back into the match after a mistake off the kickoff. Si Luvawaqa was then able to slice through, beating two defenders before carrying Littlefair over the line. With the conversion the Mercians took the lead 12-8 and that was the score at halftime.1064583_476353332458592_1276270959_o.jpg

The Mercians came bursting out of the blocks with Steven Naylor touching down and the conversion making it 18-8.

But you can’t write off the Maltese with captain/coach Chris Parker simply running straight hard to crash over and the conversion meant the score stood at 18-14. Then it was prop turned winger Dilon Urry who ran onto a nicely weighted pass to crash over in the left corner.

With the sideline conversion the Maltese hit the lead with the score at 20-18. After a Mercian mistake Parker scored his second and the conversion made it 26-18.
Darren Edmunds then had the chance to land the killer blow with 10 minutes remaining but couldn’t handle the final pass. Si Luvawaqa then scored his second, sprinting 80 metres and the conversion meant we had a two-point ball game. 26-24.

But after the Mercians were unable to keep possession when moving it down their right hand side the match was all over. The Maltese triumphant 26-24, claiming the 2013 Dove Men+Care Summer Trophy in a very tough match.

C Sgt Al Boyle said the Mercian team were a credit to the British Army and showed terrific determination to match it with a Semi-National team.

“It was a great effort from the boys tonight. It’s still very early for us in terms of development and these guys really showed great pride, passion and determination to get as close as they did,” said C Sgt Boyle.

Maltese Captain/Coach, Chris Parker said the win meant a lot to the players; “These guys played great tonight. They were dedicated and passionate for the cause. It was a tough match but they stood up when it mattered.”

Parker also said it was an honour to score for his country; “To just play for your country is an honour in itself but to score two tries is great... I don’t usually score so to do it in a match like this is pretty special.”

And debutante Brad Littlefair said it was unbelievable to play for his country; “I’m representing my family here and I am honoured to play for my country. It’s the most important match I’ve ever played in and extremely proud to play for Malta.”

Littlefair played all 80 minutes in his international debut and said he did so with an injured shoulder; “I injured my right shoulder at training but I really wanted to play. So I tackled all night with my left shoulder and just did my best.”

Monday night’s win was Malta’s fourth from their last five matches at home after defeating Denmark twice and Norway once.

Malta XIII 26 (C.Parker 2, D.Cerketa, D.Urry tries; S.Keep 3 from 3, R.Attard 2 from 2 goals) defeated
1 MERCIAN [British Army] 24 (S.Luvawaqa, S.Naylor, J.Kauleta tries; T.Lander 4 from 4 goals)
H-T: 1 MERCIAN 12-8
Players of the Match: Dragan Cerketa (Malta XIII) and Luke Riordan (1 MERCIAN)

Give Malta Rugby League (MRL) a qualifying path to the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.

Malta Rugby League (MRL) is an Affiliate Member of the Rugby League European Federation (RLEF), just the same as numerous other World Cup Qualification participating nations.

The MRL was founded in 2004, to promote and develop Rugby League within the Maltese community.

Since 2004, the 'Malta Knights' have risen to a RLIF international ranking high of 20th, and currently hold an RLEF ranking of 14th in Europe.

Malta won the 2010 RLEF European Bowl, placed 2nd on for/against to Germany for the 2011 RLEF European Shield and in 2012 won the Dove Men+Care International Series over Denmark.

Malta, an island of circa 420,000 population, also has large supporter bases in Australia, the UK and the USA. Prominent Rugby League personalities are all big fans of Maltese Rugby League for the fact that Malta has added value for Rugby League, something that not many nations can present.

Qualification to a 'team sport' World Cup would be Malta's greatest sporting achievement in history. And this is your chance to do your part in having the authorities give that opportunity for a qualification path to the MRL.

As well as representative teams through Maltese Heritage RL (Australia) and Maltese Exiles RL (UK), the MRL has players playing at various leagues internationally including:

MALTA
- MRL Dove Men+Care Championship

AUSTRALIA
- NRL
- NSW Cup
- QLD Cup
- NYC U20's
- Ron Massey Cup
- SG Ball U18's
- Harold Matthews U16's

ENGLAND
- Super League
- Academy U19's
- Championship
- Championship 1
- Various county leagues

FRANCE
- Elite 1

NEW ZEALAND
- Various county leagues

USA
- USARL Championship

WALES
- Wales Premier Conference

Malta Rugby League (MRL) deserves a shot at Rugby League World Cup 2017 Qualifying!

Absolutely. Development Manager Anthony Micallef has done some great work there. Malta has been a superb host to visiting RL teams. I was privileged to be involved with England Lionhearts in the first ever RL game on Malta in 2005. All the players in that Lionhearts squad cherish the memories. It was even on national tv there. I think Rob Potts has enjoyed a visit there with his Leeds Akkies. Wonderful place, wonderful people involved. I have signed the petition. Hope lots of you will. We are only talking about the qualifiers initially after all.
