I am fascinated to know how the coverage of these two compare. Does the Aussie press go overboard on the Lions or is the focus on the SOO, or fair crack for both ? What is grabbing the Nations attention ?

At the moment it is all SOO in Qld and NSW. There will be some reasonable coverage in Aus for Lions over the coming weeks but it will only be equal at best to NRL. In the rest of the country, they don't give a monkeys for either really. Brief half page articles with 8 full page AFL spreads

The Lions first test is apparently taking place in Brisbane four days before Origin 2! Might not get a look in!

Rugby Union is that popular in Australia we have a Kiwi Coach. So to answer your question Rugby Union in NSW and Queensland is about as popular as big wave surfing in Yorkshire UK.
