Well, not everybody is, even within the industry. I think it's worth doing (phase 1 only!) and not just because it will become the quickest route back North for me ... (GW to Old Oak Interchange, change to a Manchester train, also neatly avoiding 4 hours on a Cross Country Voyager).

enlightened self interest.

one of my concerns is who it is for.

Keeping it local

Lots of people. Travellers from Brum and the North, most obviously. Commuters on the existing lines between Brum and Euston, who will get more trains to occupy the space opened up by taking the fast trains away. Freight operators, ditto. Users of local services between Stafford and Euston, ditto. And then there's the similar benefits to the Midland and EC lines as fast trains from Leeds and Sheff are pathed via HS2 instead. Me, and others like me who will benefit from the new interchange opportunities at Old Oak (to Heathrow, e.g.).

So now the predicted cost has gone up to £80bn+.

This is such a bargain it's not true.

Cheer up, RL is actually rather good

This is a socially-beneficial infrastructure project that we'll struggle to afford. Perhaps we can ask for some foreign aid.
