It's the name of their old stadium, before they moved to the Galpharm.

And this Londoner's even had the misfortune to have been to matches there (nice clubhouse, though).

As well as rugby, Fartown was a venue for athletics, cricket, including Yorkshire games and bowls. It was operated by the Huddersfield Cricket and Athletic Club but the fans had difficulty singing that comfortably, so they started calling the team Fartown after the name of the complex, viz the Fartown Grounds.  ;)

And don't even ask about Arena 84.

nah, it's because it's common within certain West Yorkshire districts to collect their own flatulence in large glass jars (in several towns - Huddersfield amongst them they collect not only their own but those of family, friends and neighbours) and thus literally are the owners of farts. This became corrupted over the years into Fartowners.

Fartown was a fantastic ground for watching rugby ... a huge steep terrace (like Odsal still has) ran down the length of one touchline.

I played there once. The "changing rooms" were a complete misnomer... they hadn't changed in about a hundred years.

This nickname has no connection with the current Huddersfield Giants, who were formed in the early 1980s in Sheffield, and their former name was Scaleflow or something similar.

I played cricket at Fartown, and RL. It was an appalling dump which does a disservice to the word dump and it had clearly had several decades of abject neglect. It would have been tremendous back in the day I'm sure, but that must have been 50 years + back.

Before my RL time but weren't they known as the Barracudas at that time?

I remember reading about this at the time and not knowing anything about RL, assumed they were a pretty big deal not far off the NY Giants or something.

No I don't care if you're if you're into different bands

Arena 84 and the Barracudas was later stolen by Keighly for Cougarmania and then the Bulls for Bullmania

Alas for Huddersfield it was during one of the worst econonomic cricis until the present

Still the old Spains Road ground at Fartown Bar was one of the best views and best pitches at one time, wide open to encourage fast passing play.

The Claret and Gold has come a long long way since then, and I never though in those days I'd see us in the hunt for a trebble at the top of the game.

Given that this is about RL history, it's worth reminding you that it's a different club. Fartown died when the cannibalisation of Sheffield Eagles took place.

The Giants are where they are now due to the massive financial investment of Ken Davey and the council building Town a ground not because of some kind of organic demand driven resurgence.

So by tradition they should now call themselves Galpharm
