This is on our website -

St Albans Centurions are proud to announce that they will be playing a friendly game against the British Army Rugby League team at 6.45pm on Wednesday 7th August at their Toulmin Drive ground in St Albans. The Army requested this game as a warm up match before the start of their Inter Services Rugby League Tournament against the Navy and RAF that begins later in August.

St Albans Centurions are also using this game as an opportunity to raise money for the Army charity 'TROOPAID'. The Mayor of St Albans will also be attending.

Centurions chairman Brian parker said " TROOP AID was founded in November 2006 by three ex servicemen as a result of a visit to Selly Oak Hospital’s Alexandra Wing in Birmingham.  This is the home of the Defence Medical Welfare Services who are responsible for the welfare of all Armed Forces Personnel, male and female who have been injured during the conflict in Afghanistan and elsewhere.  They found that when injured troops return to the United Kingdom from the war zones they arrive back without their personal effects or clothing, just what they are wearing.  The objective of TROOP AID is to support them for their first few days of recouperation by providing the basic essentials that they need upon arrival at hospital and for the next few days until family or friends can get things sorted.  All funding to this charity is voluntary, which is why we decided to help.  Admission to the game is free, and there will be a beer and refreshment tent on site. However, we will be passing a bucket round for any donations to this worthy charity. After the game there is an open invitation for everyone to come back to our clubhouse where refreshments will be available."

Just bumping this back up as a reminder about the game tonight.  After being beaten by Barla GB Lions, I'm sure the Army will want to win this one before crossing swords with the other two services.  Hopefully we will get a bit of support and raise a bit of money for the charity as well.

A good hard fought game that was a lot closer than the scoreline suggests. Most of the tries were scored from a the army's half from a line break and beating us on pure pace

What was the score mate? I was unable to attend due to being in Norfolk on leave.

Ref had 60 - 4, scorer had 54 - 4 and coach had 54 - 4, so it was either 9 or ten converted tries.  As this was just a friendly, It was 'officially' decided to call it 54 - 4.  A very good game, as Brooza says, a lot closer than the score suggests, by heck those south sea islanders are quick for big lads!!!  A good crowd turned up and a bucket of cash was raised for the Army charity.

Quote of the day from the wife of a local union club chairman who came along to support us, "Its very intense isn't it, much quicker and harder than what your boys play." B)

Will post a few photos from the game in next day or so.

A successful evening - the Army want to make this a yearly event, money raised for Army charity, the mayor is now a rugby league fan and told us we now have another supporter on the council.  Isn't rugby league great
