I wonder if this would work here...  Apologise or we'll tell your mother.

You are quite right, the major thing to take away from this is that Beard got free PR....

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

She's a highly respected academic who makes serious, credible, informative history documentaries

What sort of pr does she need exactly?
It seems to me that she just wants to get on with her job unhindered by the comments if unreconstructed onanists

It is a genuine question, why does the internet seems to breed such vileness? Seemingly normal people seem to think it is fine to send horrendously abusive comments just because they don't think they'll get caught for it. It does say a lot about our culture that they seem to have an aggressively sexual nature about a lot of them.

I'm almost certain that Mary Beard is trying to drum up publicity so that she can get her Caligula documentary on BBC 1 Primetime Saturday night. Either that or so she can sell a perfume range.

Let's put this into perspective, Mary Beard has 43,000 followers on Twitter. I suspect before this incident is was less than 40,000. She retweeted a pathetic tweet directed at her: many celebrities do this all the time. Other celebrities picked it up and the subsequent abuse that the sender got led to his embarrassing climb down (only after a long refusal and attempted justification it should be said). It has become bigger news purely because the guy had a link to his own website and somebody that knew him was able to contact his mother.

If this was all created by Mary Beard to get her publicity then it was an incredible plan.

It does say a lot about our culture that they seem to have an aggressively sexual nature about a lot of them.

They're not really anonymous though, if someone is persistent enough then they can track down anyone on the internet if there's a good enough cause.  Twitter accounts link to IP addresses, IP addresses are issued by ISPs, ISPs have contact details for the account holder, police or court summons can be sent to that address.  A few high profile slappings down and ASBOs banning them from the internet would be a start.

It's essentially the same as people in riots wearing balaclavas or scarves over their faces, they think they're anonymous and can get away with anything.

It's also telling that the quickest way for Mary Beard to get an apology was for a threat to tel his mother.

I think also therein lies the problem when it comes to internet context.

Not that the bloke wasn't being vile, but misunderstanding has to start somewhere.

In his defence the ellipsis at the end of his quote is usually a tell tale sign that it is a sarcastic comment. I certainly read it as such.

I think you need some perspective considering your comments on the other thread. I don't think Mary incited the vile response she got. Just to even suggest it is distasteful.

Just let me know how anyone can manipulate Twitter?

Mary Beard has been subject to vicious abuse on twitter before this incident and she has also drawn attention to this, eg, she has spoken about it on the radio.Much of the unpleasant content has apparently focussed on sexual matters and comments about her appearance, to which some people seem to object.

I admire her spirit.

Wasn't she also abused by AA Gill for her dress sense, in the papers?
