Mixed news - the All Stars have given good entertainment, but the $2.2 million prize money on offer for the Nines was probably too persuasive a number.

According to Storm web site Craig Bellamy says he doesn't want any of his players involved in the Nines and won't see them involved unless there are big fines applied for non-involvement.

The article you linked to also has Phil Gould heavily critical of the new pre-season concept.

Johnathan Thurston not happy at dropping of Indigenous Allstars game.

The NRL is keen to stress this is a one of situation re Indigenous game due to World Cup and pressures on top players.

Looks like some clubs won't be tempted by the big bucks maybe fielding a team minus top players in the Nines.

So because of the pressures of the World Cup, rather than having 34 players playing, they're having 144 play (plus interchanges). Some of which will be playing more than one match

It'll be interesting in 2015 when we have both the All Stars game and 9's in the pre-season.

I wonder if they'll still bother with the regular pre-season games in regional areas or if we'll simply have the 9's and All Stars to build up to the season proper.

Prefer 7's rules.

It's associated too strongly with Union now. 9's should theoretically offer more of a spectacle but we'll see

Apparently the prize money will be big. Team costs will be paid and all teams will win prize money at whatever stage they are eliminated, obviously more prize money the further you go.

The NRL Nines hasn't yet officially been given the green light for next season and already it has emerged that a rival organisation is secretly trying to sign players for a Sevens tournament. Sin Bin has been told a rebel organisation is looking to sign NRL and rugby stars to a separate event which would also be staged in New Zealand. It's understood league players and coaches have been discreetly approached to gauge their interest in the concept

I can not find anything on the net about this.

No, I've only found that one mention of a competing sevens idea, and there doesn't seem to be any back up or follow up to it anywhere else.

Here's where I got it from - see half way down 'Nines vs Sevens'
