Leigh Miners 14 v 22 York Acorn

Leigh Miners suffered their third successive league defeat on Saturday afternoon to leave them with an awful lot of work to do if they are to make the top six after losing 22-14 at home to relegation threatened York Acorn on a wet afternoon at Twist Lane. Miners made the perfect start scoring in the opening minute of the game threw u18s debutante Jake Waterworth who scored under the sticks with his first touch, Jonny Youds converting to make it 6-0. Acorn hit back to make it 6-4 about ten minutes later and with five minutes of the half remaining they took the lead when second rower Joe Porter broke threw to score at the side of the posts, the kick being converted to give the score 10-6 in Acorns favour. Miners pulled the scores level at 10-10 just before the break with a try from Jimmy Muir but it was a poor half of rugby from both sides with their being far too many errors.

The second half really was just as bad with there again being plenty of errors but were in the first half where Miners had the better of the field position this half it was Acorn, although Miners edged back in front with fifteen minutes remaining from a Jonny Carroll try to make it 14-10 it was the visitors who looked the more likely of scoring and they did that with just over five minutes remaining to go back in front at 16-14 after having a few chances before finally going over. Miners tried to snatch the game in the final few minutes but it wasn't to be in what was a very poor afternoon for the home side. Acorn made sure of their first away win of the season with the last play of the game after Miners spilled the ball and Acorn raced away to score and give the final score 22-14.

On Wednesday Miners are at home to Thatto Heath Crusaders in the league, Kick off 8pm at Twist Lane.
