East Hull 14 v 18 Leigh Miners

Leigh Miners picked up their second win in five days yesterday afternoon when they won 18-14 at East Hull to move them up to seventh in the table. Miners where poor in the first half looking very flat with very little spark in their attacking play, the only positive was their hard working defensive effort which kept East Hull to six points after they scored early on from half back Carl Puckering. The home side taking a 6-0 lead into the break but it really should have been more after being the better side in a scrappy first half.

The start of the second half was again scrappy from both sides, East Hull increasing their lead to eight points with a Puckering penalty goal before the the game changed in the last half hour when Miners had a spell where they clicked into gear scoring three tries to leave the home side shell shocked after they had been the better side up to that point. The first Miners try coming from Scott O'Brien who stepped through the Easts defence to score at the side of the posts, Jonny Youds converting to make it 8-6. Sean MacDonald was next to score after some good build up play down the right, the third Miners try come after they decided to run the ball on the last tackle, Jonny Youds making the break down the left, drawing in the full back to send O'Brien in under the sticks for his second of the game, Youds again adding the extras to make the score 18-8. East Hull hit back with their second try in the final few minutes to make it 18-14 and they come close of scoring a third in the last minute only to be denied by a scrambling Miners defence who held out for victory to keep them in with a shout of a playoff spot.

Next week Miners are at home to Lock Lane.
