I am a bit late in the day as usual, but "Can you hear me Mother" (September 10 post) was comedian Sandy Powell's catch phrase. I saw him at Doncaster in the twilight of his career many years ago. He was still doing his intentionally rubbish ventriloqism act and we still laughed at it.

wasn't the stanningley game the one where Don Fox got the record for points in a game?

He also broke a window on Post Office Road with one of his conversions.

Recalls a few memories, Steve. When I was night manager in the textile trade, I had a foreman who lived directly behind the sticks on PO Road. Never forget the Monday nights when he would come into work moaning about "Them effing rugby balls going through my bathroom window and knocking hell out of my roof tiles". Full of sympathy, I told him to flit.
