When I was at school, yes, that long ago, we were taught that England and Scotland were countries, Wales was a Principality and Northern Ireland was a province. 

However, all together they from the nation of Britain. 

That is why in years gone by, when asked for your nationality, everyone said British.  I think its only a recent thing where people have been describing their nationality as English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish.

I always describe myself at British.  But since Scotland and Wales became devolved we've had our Englishness thrust upon us.  If the Scots vote for independence then we'll have to be English. Personally if they do I might ask if they can draw the new border at Bawtry so we can be part of Scotland!
