Just thought it would be good to have a Cardiff thread for all the positive promotion and activities in the host of the opening ceremony:
Rugby league preview guide- 3 copies at the back of the whsmith in the Central Cardiff train station.
Merchandise - 4 faded balls in rugby heaven in the queens arcade
Bus adverts - 1
Er that's it :(

Hmmmm.

Lets spend loads on promotion and sell six more tickets. I'm not anti promotion. But it has to be value for money.
Super League the only place in the world where people still believe that less competitors and a closed market to new competition will improve the quality of the product.

Even the Chinese and the Cubans gave up on these marxist principles years ago.

SL with a reduced number of competitors and a closed market = North Korea.

Prominent advertising on Millenium Stadium website, on the Wales Tourist Board site (visitwales.com), very poor on the Cardiff Tourist site though.

which is why advertising is such a small industry with barely a penny to rub together. Cardiff is a city of 400,000 people in a region of 1.5 million for all of whom getting to the city centre is a doddle and something that almost everybody does on a regular basis. If they are not a target then what's the bloody point of having it in the city in the first place? All we are doing is relying on people to come from other places in the first place. Zero presence, zero visibility, zero impact, zero legacy. In and out makes no sense as you might as well held it Birmingham and made it easier for people to get too. It was the same with the magic weekend and it perplexes me

I completely agree, this is not something that most people ever seem to factor in. We don't have a huge budget and we cannot take risks on marketing that may not work.

I remember the second magic weekend had a pullout in the Sunday People with a readership of about 800,000 at the time. The gate was only a few thousand higher and this wasn't necessarily due to the Sunday People. Imagine how much marketing like that would cost?

You are missing the point max. Where's the work in schools? Where are the welsh rugby league history displays? Where is the pop up shop in one of the legion of empty shops? Where's the promotion in the massive Italian heritage community in South Wales? Where are the events that seem to be everywhere elsewhere except the city with the opening ceremony? I can buy more ruwc2015 stuff then a tournament a few weeks away! Bristol has one minor game and is doing more work and promotion then cardiff. It is more than simply selling tickets it's developing a brand, an awareness, a legitimacy for the concept of a World Cup. As I said what's the point of holding it here if it doesn't do these things which seem to be happening almost everywhere else?

I agree and think that Cardiff was a strange choice for the opener. In hindsight it may prove to be quite a big mistake.

I'm not disagreeing with what you say btw, was making a more general point that some make about us needing to do more marketing as a blanket statement.

Any crowd of 40,000 or above for a game of RL in the UK is not a mistake. Quite the opposite.

i think it's likely to be a decent crowd it's the broader stuff I find frustrating with Cardiff just being treated as a venue. The attitude towards Wales seems to be its a 'rugby' nation so it'll take care of itself, the opposite is the case. Another example: a few weeks to go and there is absolutely nowhere to buy a rlwc Wales shirt in the nations capital, the joint hosts of the tournament. That's madness

I completely agree with you. Considering they have spent £1million on the dance programme for the tournament (appreciate much of this funding has come from external agencies) but actually getting bums on seats and making people aware of the tournament should be the key. The Independent article this morning posted on a previous thread is good indicator that we haven't got it right and relying heavily on facebook and twitter isn't the answer.

Wrexham seem to be doing plenty to advertise their fixture, Neath less so. Cardiff even less than Neath. Very disappointing!

I know that the Ray Tennant has been selling tickets in schools in South Wales through PBC. They've definitely been strong sales at Maesteg School according to PBC. However, I can't confirm it 100% that it was caused by PBC and myself but I prompted the RLWC 13 to contact PBC and start selling tickets in the schools. They should have already been doing this months ago!

The cup needs to be pushed on the local ITV and BBC news shows. I bet S4C and BBC2Wales would do a half hour show on the squad training if the right people were asked.

Get Jonathan Davies on the case.

Any ideas how proactive WRL are?

I have sent loads of South Wales contacts to the RLWC13 via the facebook messaging service including military personnel at 160Bde in Brecon and at MOD St Athan. Not sure what the team have done with those but they have definitely contacted the RAF News magazine as there was an article in one of their weekly editions stating MOD personnel get 50% off all tickets.

The whole presence of RLWC in cardiff has been poor ever since the trophy (on its tour) rocked up to a local council field in the north of City attended by about 30 people.

I'm disappointed so far that the city I live in hasn't been made aware of such a great event coming to its world class stadium. Many people would love to go I'm sure! I do however understand where others are coming from in saying that over-promotion would harm the budget.

I would have picked this weekend to allow free entry to cardiff castle and have the trophy put in there for all to see. Onto a winner.

Great idea! It is that 'out of the box' thinking that this great game of ours really needs.

Down to you mate sadly, although we have sold in excess of 200 tickets in just over 10 days which is good news.

I suggested small car magnetic signs that cost only £11 a pair which could then be offered to Cardiff taxi firms and or private individuals as another way -gratis - but no response so far as I suspect all budgets have been used, although you would hope that a grand o so would have been left in contingency.what I can say is that having offered them via the school the uptake has been pretty sensational tbf with little real effort. I wish I had more time to help but....

absolutely and that's what's annoying. Cardiff city centre is the centre for Cardiff, penarth, Barry, Caerphilly, Pontypridd, Newport and most of the valleys and full of tourists. It makes promotion cost effective if you just play clever. Cardiff half marathon this weekend. Cardiff blues rugby union offering ten quid tickets for all medal holders - where are we? That promotion cost a few phone calls.

It's up to Cardiff council to promote the comp in Cardiff.  They bid for it.  But they did nothing for the Magic Weekends when they were held in Cardiff so it's no surprise they are doing nothing for the world cup either.

Let's not get carried away. Even if they don't sell another ticket it should be a decent crowd. Possibly the biggest RL crowd at the Millennium.

No its not as big as RU or whatever but it is still a bloody good effort.

No I don't care if you're if you're into different bands

No cause for so much hatred, I'm just a different man

Pull off that cover, I will too, and learn to understand

With music deep inside we'll make world unity our plan
