the thing is though that a lot of marketing is targeted and not seen. Despite apparently no effort from Cardiff we will have a larger crowd than any heartland test for years - and there are still three weeks to go.

The opener has been pushed heavily recently but I think sometimes unless people see something on TV they assume nothing is happening.

They don't seem to be targetting the people of South Wales at all at the moment and they fundamentally should be the first target with the people of Bristol and Gloucestershire second (really surprised there is no offer for both those games...). The crowd will be good but it could be great...

And no evidence whatsoever that the significant amounts of money required to do the kind of promotion people want to see would be balanced by enough income in return.

nobody is demanding masses of expenditure it's about why we are in the Cardiff region in the first place. If it's just a venue that ticks certain boxes then there you go but that's a missed opportunity. If we just had the list of stuff being done in Bristol I would be happy

going off what we have heard - we have probably sold 40k with the majority from outside of the North of England so somebody somewhere must be making these people aware.

There is a TV advert doing the rounds on twitter especially for the opening ceremony. Be interesting to see where this is shown. Wales, Northern England or national

All the promo's I have seen, including the new shirt and the opening ceremony one have been targeted at promoting the players rather than the sport. Eg. No actual game footage shown, just a focus of the individuals.

Scubby is right to some extent, a lot of people plan shorter term especially in todays economic climate and i expect there to be a push for tickets in the coming weeks. Knowing it would not be sold out, and trying to sort out who else would be coming with me in advance is a nightmare, so i have not bought mine yet but will do imminently as i can finalise numbers now with greater certainty.

There is nothing wrong with being ambitious and wanting more but we have to be realistic and we are predominantly a minority sport. 40k at Millenium is the bare minimum we need to be respectable, particularly bearing in mind the opening ceremony is taking place so it doesn't look too bad on TV. Personally i would be delighted with anything 50k + and i think we won't be far off that.

A contact at RFL told me the Welsh Govt/Council paid a significant sum for the match, so much so that even if they didn't sell any tickets they wouldn't lose money. It's a balancing act between making sure the World Cup makes as much money as possible and getting as many spectators as possible. Perhaps the RFL/Cardiff Council could have combined better with the promotion of the event but i am not in the know as to what has gone on.

The WG haven't 'paid' for the match as such, what they have funded is a legacy from the World Cup ie they want to see some real investment in the Welsh economy and in the community post the RLWC. Cardiff Council, as far as I know, have little in terms of the finance to do with it directly, however, as I mentioned earlier its down to the RLWC committee to do this sort of promotion.

Heard a few adverts on Cardiff Capital FM this morning promoting the opening ceremony on the 26th. First time I have heard any rugby league adverts on that station. Played 4 times between 10 and 11am

brilliant! First of many I hope. I think what happens here is the difference between a good crowd and a blockbuster. Example one: Barry 50,000 people 20 mins by train from the stadium for 3 quid! Family friendly prices, don't have to worry about hotel prices or paying to cross a bridge - lets get em in! Send the mascot to the schools, radio ads, get Gareth Thomas down there, some cheerleaders, maybe the cup itself - jobs a good un!

just to say that whatever my criticisms I've no doubt that Ian will be working his socks off trying to get as much press as is possible. Absolutely stalwart of the game, passionate and dedicated. Got me into the game properly, it's his fault that I care so much in the first place :)

Yeah but in effect they have 'paid' for the match because host cities had to bid for them. Of course they want something for their money - a legacy, a boost to the local economy and to showcase Cardiff to millions of households throughout the world.

I thought Gareth Thomas was an World Cup ambassador - has he not been round drumming up interest locally? I've not seen/heard anything......

Gareth Thomas is a World Cup ambassador and he has been referred to as appearing in different places (although not in a Dr Who sense) but whether he has been out and about in Wales I don't know.

Is that for the opening ceremony?  If so then it's a good offer.  When I went to book my tickets last weekend, all the cheap seats had gone.  Some of the remaining seats were priced at £99 for example.  If they want to shift those now then they're going to have to cut the price.
