Flat atomosphere for a Wales home game though most of the crowd stayed. Game was like a plucky championship club taking on a Super League side. plenty of welsh effort but superiar NRL class told with some slick handling moves from the Aussie-Italians in the 2nd Half.
Crowd getting bored towards the end performed a mexican wave started by the Fanatics.

to be fair the wave was killed by some decent welsh play.

Usual predictable negative whinges.

Will they be whinging about the Irish as well (only one Irish-born player in their squad)?
Or Cook Islands (1 Cook Island-born)?
Or Scotland (2 Scottish-born)?
Or Samoa (3 Samoan-born)?
Or Tonga (4-Tongan-born)?

Wait, USA aren't in that list? They've got a fair few American-born players apparently. Well, most have never played in their domestic competitions, so they aren't legit either. That now rules them out, too. And probably Fiji.

Bit of a boring World Cup with just England, Wales, France, Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea...

although it may be unfair people sense the difference between players who clearly have significant ties in the main to their country of origin, the language and culture where doing a war dance, singing songs in their own language, where almost certainly mum and dad have brought them up to value all that is palpable. And guys who from a distance seem to have an Italian name and that's it smirking their way through the anthem as they enjoy their post nrl jolly. Albeit playing some decent rugby. Personally I would simply go from the grandfather rule to the father (or mother) rule

So because the Italian side don't do a dance before, they're not as Italian as the Islanders are Islanders?

What about the Scottish and Irish? Do they wear kilts and drink Guinness?

Red Rooster - I know you're glass half full, but the Mexican Wave was towards half time. Those people interested in the game stayed for the second half where the atmosphere was much better.

I agree the Italians have played within the rules with regards to eligibility. What I find farcical is the that you can change your allegiance. Minichiello has previously represented Australia, Civoneceva similarly and now represents Fiji and Moi Moi was a Kiwi in 2011 Four Nations and is now a Tongan. There are other examples.

As for yesterdays game the better side on the day won but I felt we (Wales) were on the wrong end of a couple of refereeing decisions. Kear's try that was disallowed didn't look a ball steal to me. Italy also had the benefit of a couple of iffy calls.

Thought Wales fought hard against a superior team who showed the value of a good kicking game which was missing from our boys.

There's always next week...

I'm not being an hashtag.

It's a serious issue that's really beginning to grind. What is this cultural upbringing that the Italians need to have that the Scottish and Irish already have? It's complete and utterly biased towards what that person wants to whinge about.

What makes you a national? Being born there? Adopting a certain culture (isn't this a multi-cultural world now?)? Living there? Someone will always pick out an argument to suit their needs and ignore the rest.

So can I expect the same outrage and constant thread drifting on every Ireland and Scotland game as well?

Too true, every other sport is doing it. As soon as League does the same its a big deal who cares. It will only be wrong if they dont capitalise on it to develop the sport in the country itself.

We lost, fair and square. If Italy qualify and we don't, good luck to them in the rest of the competition.

It wasn't a great game, but it was a really good one.

If Italy was a plastic team, they certainly didn't play like it. Neither side left anything on the pitch; it was a very hard encounter and nobody was in it for the money. I'm really proud of the Welsh boys and Britain's ethnic Italian community  will be just as proud of their boys.

The purpose of the World  Cup is to spread the message of Rugby League to a worldwide audience. Otherwise, we might just as well have a 6 Nations tournament with three teams as whipping boys. If all the other "plastic" teams perform with the same pride and effort, we are about to have a tremendous competition.

The funny thing is that the way the competition is put together, Wales can beat the Cooks and USA and qualify 2-1 and Italy could get nabbed by the Tongans in the last pool game and go out.

That tonga v Italy game has the potential to be an awesome game that hope there's a full house for that

The EU has been robbing us blind for thirty years. It's about time we wised up and stitched them up with some of our bent rules.

I think they need to open the whole house up first to help make that happen. Seems to be a very strict policy of filling TV vantage points up before releasing the rest of the stadium. Agree about this game. Should be fantastic and the winner to meet NZ in all probability too.

I will be shouting for Tonga, in case anyone was in any doubt. :)
The 2 groups look pretty mis matched, and so Wales may come to find that 16 points is actually the lowest losing margin in the cross group games.
Having vented my spleen, I will comment no longer on "Italy" the team's lack of genuine connection to Italy the country. Indeed, I would be delighted to read that they will keep the team together and play in Italy in the years to come, spreading the gospel at home.

Are Italy's exploits getting any media coverage in Italy? I think this really needs pushing. I'm presuming that most of the team CAN speak Italian if they came from stauch Italian families, so why not do this? I really enjoyed watching the match yesterday and thought the Italian shirts were great. Was also good to see how happy one of the Italian players was when the anthem played - his smile was wider than the stadium and he was obviously generally overjoyed by the occasion. The other thing that struck me was how similar the occasion (not the match!) was to a six nations game between Wales and Italy, which is great.

So you want an Italian-Australian, who was born in Australia to Italian parents to speak in a foreign language on British TV when interviewed? :fie:  okay!

if you bothered to read what I said you will see I wasn't trying to argue anything just point out some things that clearly influence peoples perception of certain teams whether rightly it wrongly but hey you're right so need to discuss it any further. Well done

they do and they don't. Not sure we will find any team in any other sport where 90% of the team are heritage players. It is problematic, and perception does matter but in the end as with everything else it's about how we map our way from where we are, to where we want to be. As long as we make some measurable progress between cups then im happy

No - on Italian TV

But TV around the world is taking the BBC or Premier sports feed.
