BBC NewsBT Sport announces an exclusive three-year deal to broadcast live Champions League and Europa League football matches in the UK.

Does this increase the importance of Super League to Sky, I wonder?

It may mean that we'll be asked to play some midweek games in 2015.

The Premier League is the big one.  That's the carrot Sky have always used to encourage subscriptions - as long as that's in place then their interest in other sports/competitions will always be of the 'add on' variety.

More of a hit to itv I would say - one super league game a week on terrestrial tv should be the aim of the rfl or the wc interest will dissapate

Widnes Vikings also to get a franchise - RIGHT

Absolutely think this is good news for RL. Sky will be feeling a bit vulnerable. However, have we the leaders with the commercial nous to exploit this situation? Time for Sally!!

For reference: the current SL deal (Sky live and highlights, BBC highlights) runs to the end of the 2016 season.

Would ITV show RL nationally though? They still have the wherewithall to regionalise broadcasts to Granada & Yorkshire TV areas only, like they did previously back in the 1970's, and the BBC still do with a firsst showing of the SuperLeague Show.

The schedules would read:

1900 Emmerdale

1930 Coronation St

2000 SuperLeague (Only available in't North)

Why? So we can sell the rights to Premier?

ITV would never show rugby in primetime, especially up against Champions League on BT. It needs 6 or 7 million audience minimum in that slot so it would try to hoover up the non-football audience, with drama or more soaps. Sky however would probably consider it to fill the Champions league slots, although it will only really help them in March and April.

However, I agree with the earlier poster that we need one game a week on terrestrial to keep the World Cup interest. Challenge cup isn't enough. So bundle that up into the same deal as Superleague and  show one game a week on Saturday afternoons on BBC/ITV plus Eng vs Aug 4 nations. Everything else on Sky. National TV audience is the only way to grow the game.

The Super League season is near enough finished by the time the Champions League group stages are on. Surely they're gonna have to show more than 2 games a week though if we are to have 2 SL's?

It's time to park the camels.

Isn't that the reason why Brian Barwick was brought in... he has headed BBC Sport and ITV sport as well as doing numerous editor and producer roles... As Chief Executive at FA he negotiated TV rights with BBC and ITV plus he has experience of other sports.

One thing they have is somebody that has been on both sides of the table negotiating many TV deals.

Some so called expert on the BBC News was saying, sky will have to invest extra money into the sports it has, and extra money into drama, to keep hold of its viewers.

It looks like Sky will need RL as much as ever soon, it the game gets the structure right and ensures London's survival and a second French team we should be in a good position to get the deal we deserve.

I hope the RFL approach BT sport to show Superleague games. The latest figures from BARB for Aviva premiership games is the biggest I've seen ever. That CL deal is huge for them but premiership football is the icing on the cake for any broadcasters.

or News Corp as in Murdoch off loads it to Vodaphone whom have $130billion  to burn following their selling off Verizon half and are looking to  have TV, and broadband to enable it to compete with triple play, as per their German Cable deal (Kabel) and consideration for Liberty. The other rumour is they may consider an offer for BskyB....  but either way the "sports portfolio" remains an issue...

Sky was the hunter and now is the hunted. It will try & protect what it has. It had a good product in super league. We want to extend that partnership but we may now be in a position to ask for certain changes. All is fair in love & war & tv dealings...

Don't see what benefit a second french team would bring Sky, they don't broadcast to or have subscribers in France.

Any additional French team needs to come with their own, separate TV deal.
