Would a move lock stock and barrel to Maesteg make sense for the Scorpions and WRL staff in S Wales ?

1. The Academy is based there
2. The school is very supportive and has excellent local contacts on the council (both town and borough)
3. Maesteg RFC is both more than big enough for both C1 and Championship level and has the requisite bar and function room facilities. Also there are a few ex Wales RL internationals/dragonhearts from the early 2000s at the RU club Karl Hocking, Grant Epton etc. Over 2000 attended an RL game there when Bridgend Blue Bulls were in their pomp.
4. The school has entered every year group in champion schools - a decent pool of players to come through in addition to the Academy players.
5. It's pretty central for all concerned to get there
6. The ONLY WRL Office in S Wales is based there and the school has plans to introduce work based learning courses that could be used to train employees for the club/WRL from September. Already Tesco have agreed to employ some (they are next to Maesteg RFC)
7. If we consolidate in this town and concentrate all our manpower and resources we can properly establish a bridgehead to develop properly and successfully. NWC are doing this in Wrexham...

As I said its all hypothetical but what are your thoughts ?

About an hour from Cardiff and no trains on Sunday!

Predictions for the future -
Crusaders RL to get a franchise for 2012 onwards -WRONG
Widnes Vikings also to get a franchise - RIGHT
Crusaders RL to do the double over Widnes and finish five places ahead of them -WRONG
Widnes Vikings NOT to dominate rugby league in years to come! STILL TO COME

Trains go to Bridgend, buses every 30mins, plus easy to arrange lifts for supporters Jannerboy. Not every game needs to be on a Sunday too.

Still think we need a team in Cardiff, really well connected, well populated, good rivalry with the west country - blues have a 400k new artificial pitch which can be used almost all the time. And pubs you won't get your head kicked in for being from the next village over!

Nor in Maesteg.

Also, they won't charge the earth to play there which I'm sure Cardiff would.

And there's no presence of RL at all in Cardiff at the moment...

Cardiff with a massively rich backer for a SL side maybe, but right now RL in Wales has to build from where its AT&T Jannerboy.

Mate no offence but nobody wants to go to neath, I can't see anyone wanting to go another small town even further tucked away in some post-industrial town with a knackered old ground. Undoubtedly options are limited but I can't see maestag being the solution

If you've only got vegetables then there is no point trying to make chicken soup, so make the best vegetable soup you can, and where there are roots there are vegetables, ok I'm losing the plot now, however I think your suggestions make a lot of sense.  So yeah why try and make soup somewhere else when all your ingredients for good soup are right under your nose.

I think if you are going to judge this it has to be on the points made, rather than just a comment about it being worse than Neath.

well it kind of depends on what you are trying to do. If it's to get me to games maestag won't do it more than once or twice. If it's to get the casual league fan in South Wales to come along I'm not sure it fits.

I'm saying that the Demons and Spartans aren't a real presence beyond a limited amatuer set up.

Spartans are in Radyr, Demons don't have juniors as far as I can see. Not a sledge, just an observation.

ah gotcha no worries just hadn't heard anything. Demons seemed to have a decent junior set up a few years back so that's a shame.

It's to properly establish a base with real roots and to grow that over the next decade and beyond from a location that may not be a bustling metropolis but one that we can focus all our attention on and build strength.

WRL and RL in S Wales isn't strong enough, nor has the financial muscle to do much else. As I said Wrexham (a much bigger town) has recognised that they need to focus their efforts on there rather than dissipate their forces.

To me Merthyr should be looked at as the base. New 3i pitch reasonable stadium pretty central and with some rugby league history.

but the beginning has to be attracting the less hard core fan because the main problem is that we are expecting some enthusiastic but relatively skint shareholders to try and run a semi pro team on 200 speccies. And in a more awkward place to get too with no greater attraction than neath which is not currently working.

For example Merthyr is an hour and a half from Newport and 2 hours from Bridgend each wayby train! It's an hour from Cardiff which goes direct there

Whats stopping a third welsh team? !?!

If theres as much support as you say and tesco get involved as primary sponser? ?

Maybe wigan could add support?

Would be a good rivalry in south wales,

I notice all the top players from wales are leaving for france...are the other lot in trouble? ?
