There does seem to be a new skiing heartland for the UK, however, based in the North of England, where there are several dry slopes and indoor skiing centres, and where several of our 2014 Winter Olympians have learned their trade. 'Ski Sunday' did a piece on the facilities in Halifax, Castleford and Sheffield last weekend.

Possibly, but one of the places (Cas, I think) is an indoor centre, with snow instead of dry slope matting.

There're lots being built all over the place these days - indoor ones anyway. They're good for learning the basics but that's about all, the runs are too short to get any proper skiing/boarding done. I suppose it's making it easier, and cheaper, for kids to get into the sport in the first place which is obviously a good thing.

We have two very good medal prospects in the Women's Skeleton Bob, including Lizzie Yarnold, who is likely to be World Champion by the time the Winter Olympics begins.

Yep, she's now the World Champion! :)

To me, skiing would only be interesting if they raced against each other instead of against the clock.

Someone needs to make a film about this! I bet it was those Germans who hid their luggage....

Ski Cross. Wasn't that the TRLers adopted sport from the last winter olympics?

Listening to the opening ceremony there's been an attempt to hijack a plane in the Ukraine to fly to Sochi. Could be a nervous games for some of the competitors and fans.

It were nowt. A drunk, it seems .....Thake me tho Shotcthi.....hic!

Just watched and very much enjoyed the excellent opening ceremony.  Spoiled only by the inane bleatings of the vapid, insipid, uninspired, colourless, uninteresting, feeble, dull, boring, tedious, tired, unimaginative, lifeless, zestless, spiritless and vacuous Hazel Irvine.

Bring on the ice hockey, speed skating, curling and ski-jump!

Slopestyle Finals at 08:40 tomorrow for me
I caught a brief glimpse of qualification and the commentators were going crazy over the GB blokes in this, but the judges thought otherwise.

Noticed that the Women's Ice Hockey tournament is using a 'RLWC-style' Super Group, in which the top 2 progress directly to the semis and the bottom 2 go to the quarters.

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.
