York Acorn 12 Siddal 16.

Very good performance from Acorn and unlucky not to get a win.

Try from ex Knight Ollie Wilcox Harrison on 5 minutes converted by Chilton.

Siddal hit back to lead 10-6 but then Matt Woods evened things up just after the break.

Siddal, playing against the wind in the first half, had been taking the opportunity to slow down the home side's play the ball and Coach Scott Rhodes spoke to the ref about it at half time.

On 53 minutes Jonny Waldron made a try saving tackle on Siddal winger Hope and took a bad blow to the head. The game was held up for 35 minutes as an ambulance was called.

On the resumption good work by the Acorn forwards, particularly Davey Burns, kept providing a platform for another score while good defence kept the Shaun Garrod inspired Halifax side at bay at the other end.

On 66 minutes a Chilton penalty gave Acorn a slender lead but they were harshly penalised for holding down ( given what had gone before ) with six minutes left and Siddal scored on the left with full back Gareth Blackburn converting to seal the win.

Scott Rhodes said afterwards that he was proud of how his side had performed in their first game of the season and that it would stand them in good stead for their upcoming NCL challenge.

MOM Acorn; Ollie Wilcox-Harrison

It would be interesting to know what Gary Thornton thought of Acorns performance, according to the Press he was going to the game.

Gary was at the game as was John Guildford.

Gary seemed impressed with the quality of the game and, during our chat, mentioned that a couple of players had caught his eye... ;)
