The floods have finally hit the Tory heartlands in the Thames Valley

http://www.telegraph...ood-relief.html

Hebden Bridge was flooded twice in the summer of 2012, apparently when floods hit the Calder Valley, money is an object.

When the Calder Valley floods it only affects three under-achieving rugby clubs.  ;)

Isn't the 'money no object' line just standard government policy in relation to events such as this? It's nothing new. Emergency relief and repair comes from central government, whatever the cost, councils just claim it back.

Saying it the way he has is just nice spin.
With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

That may be, but the line certainly wasn't trotted out when it did flood here in Hebden Bridge. Can't afford it was the view then.

Yes austerity meant we had to cut budget to save money. Looks like the budget cut to the EA was a false ecomony.

Save a pound now spend 10 pounds later

I didn't realise that the EA had the power to control the wind, the rain and the waves.  Wow.

It doesn't, however it does have the power to deal with the consequences, or it did when it was properly funded.

I would say that Heath RUFC and Old Rishworthians RUFC are in the Calder Valley ... they are east of Halifax but at the foot of steep valleys and their fields are on the banks of the Calder.

Heath is at West Vale Elland and Rishworthians at Copley both on the river agreed, but neither can be classed as Calder Valley.

Like it was in 2007?  .The EA s job isn't to build walls round everything and its never had enough money to do that in any case.   To what extent does personal responsibility play a part.  Live in the Somerset Levels? Guess what?  When it rains it floods. Always has, always will.

Also, lost amongst all the criticism of the EA is this unchallenged (as far as I know) nugget: since December just shy of 6,000 'premises' have flooded.  A fair estimate for the number of same saved by flood defences: 1.3m. (Source: Press Association)

Money no object refers to money spent on emergency relief.  If the council in Hebdon Bridge had set up an evacuation centre or troops sent in, then the costs for that come under 'money no object'.  It's the same for every council for any number of events.

It does not cover long-term flood protection.

That's as maybe with regards to long term protection, there is still however now a commitment that funds will be available for support to prevent short term damage though, such as sandbags. I don't recall that level of support being made available in Hebden Bridge, or anywhere else that has suffered catastrophic flooding in the recent past however. I don't begrudge the support being offered at all; I've seen first hand the damage that flooding can do, and was very fortunate not to suffer more damage to my own home in 2012. I do however feel that in such scenarios that any assistance should be on an equitable basis.
