There was a by-election yesterday. Who knew? Not many of those with a vote, judging by the turnout (28%).

Labour hold, UKIP distant second, Tories third, Lib Dems lost deposit. The majority? They didn't give a toss either way, it seems.

Labour stronghold and a history of low turnouts in the area for by elections, I think there was one a few years back with just over 18%. Apparently the other parties hardly bothered campaigning.

Normally, Radio 4's 'Today' programme make a fairly big thing of by-elections, but this wasn't given extensive treatment this morning.

It's quite a big majority for a small turnout.  Not surprised by the overall level of apathy or lack of interest from outside though.

Plenty of other big stories, floods, another major storm coming, DLT, a Labour bye election victory in a northern working class seat is a "bears defecate in woods" type story.  If Labour'd lost like in Bradford it'd it'd have been the lead.

George Galloway has fallen out with his local party; the Respect Councillors have fallen out with the party.

Labour will get Bradford West back in if the block Muslim vote decides to switch sides.

Is Bradford a Muslim area ? what happened to the Hindu's/Sikh's and West Indian communities.

Wythenshawe is reasonably prosperous. The The Tories must be pooing their pants over the By-Election result.

Especially because the weather was terrible ... usually more of a deterrent for the Labour vote than the Tory vote.

Bradford West constituency ... presumably ~30% Muslim.

Postal votes are allowed even if you live 100 yards from the polling station.

God knows whose votes Galloway can depend on.

Voting forms in Bradford West could also double as lottery tickets.

Wythenshawe - the place they filmed Shameless - wasn't that prosperous last time I was there.

ShamEless was originally shot in location on the real-life West Gorton council estate in East Manchester and in the Pie Factory Studios Salford Since Series 5, the show was filmed from a purpose-built set on the Roundthorn Industrial Estate in South Manchester, on the site of an old warehouse as well as around Wythenshawe and Sale.

Wythenshawe use to be the biggest council estate in Europe  and is Labour  through and through and through and though - specifically Old Labour hence the relative success of UKIP on the immigration issue.

Regardless - since it was formed as a constituency nobody has got within 8,000 votes of Labour.

Is there any thread that can't have Muslims dragged into it?  Please at least try to keep it vaguely on topic.

So, there may be a cultural allegiance not a religious one. My missus was all panicky that she was doing Muslim all wrong!

It's a known 'thing'.  Happens in Rochdale in certain wards.  Its a Kashmiri thing rather than a religious thing, iirc.

(though voting for your mate/family/person you identify with isn't exactly rare.)

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

It's sinister when other people do it.
