Always thought 'Klon' was a corruption of 'Klondike' - perhaps ironic, as it was renowned not for the earth being full of gold, but all manner of other *stuff*.

 

Yes Phill, you're probably right. It was a bit of a wilderness, a mini version of the rugged region the Klondike in Canada's Yukon Territory. Maybe there's a different origin to its name.

One big difference, it's -24C today in Whitehorse, Yukon!
