The Captains of Oxford and Cambridge University rugby league clubs hosted a reception this evening (Thursday 20 February) at international law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in Fleet Street, London.

Taking place two weeks before the 34th meeting of the two universities on 6 March, Oxford’s Jack Baker and Cambridge’s James Tennison were joined by senior players from both blues squads and welcomed old boys, sponsors and supporters, press and invited guests.

The evening provided the opportunity for the captains to discuss their clubs’ respective seasons, thoughts on the upcoming game at the HAC and the difficulties over squad selection, which will be narrowed down next week to the final 17 players from each club.

Baker, a final year student reading Politics, Philosophy and Economics at St Peter’s College said “We come into this year’s Varsity Match after a string of four solid performances that have seen us tie the competition overall. We’re now determined to take the lead and equal Cambridge’s five-win series in the late 1990s and take another victory in 2015 to simply dominate the light blues.”

Tennison, a third year law student at Trinity College, spoke about the Cambridge season to date “We have a lot of returning blues this year, which has seen us win all but one of our games this season. It has also and made the whole club raise its game as competition for places is as fierce as I’ve ever seen. Winning is our only option this year to return to our rightful place in front of Oxford.”

“The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.”  Eleanor Roosevelt
