The RLEF has introduced European Championship branding to its three-tiers of official competition, aligning the organisation with the majority of European sports. The European Cup will now be known as the European Championship, while the Shield and Bowl are replaced by European Championship B and European Championship C. The latter two competitions are already linked and the RLEF is planning for all competitions to have a connecting relationship of some degree, pending confirmation of the Rugby League International Federation’s multi-year calendar.

The RLEF undertook an organisation-wide consultation in 2013, including a workshop conducted by Director Graeme Thompson in London in August, during which the new proposals were debated by the attending member nations. Although negotiations continue surrounding the European Championship - the notional winner of which will join Australia, England and New Zealand in the 2016 Four Nations - fixtures for Euro B have been finalised, with Euro C close to agreement.

In Euro B, which is played over two years, promoted Ukraine kick off in Belgrade in mid-May against Serbia, a week before hosting champions Russia in Kharkov. Ukraine has never beaten either country but is one of the fastest improving nations in Europe.  World Cup qualifiers Italy, who won all three of their matches in the 2013 Shield to finish second on points difference, enter the competition in July.

In Euro C, Norway has been replaced by Malta, while Greece is promoted to take the place of Ukraine. Malta and Greece will kick off the tournament in June, while the Czech Republic will make a first visit to Greece in October to complete the triangular series.

European Championship B 2014-15 – Phase 1
SERBIA V UKRAINE - 17 May, Belgrade
UKRAINE V RUSSIA - 24 May, Kharkov
RUSSSIA V SERBIA - 21 June, Naro Fominsk
UKRAINE V ITALY 5 - July, Kharkov
ITALY V RUSSIA 26 - July, Gemona
SERBIA V ITALY 20 - September, Belgrade

Do the games in Euro B double-up as World Cup Qualifiers for 2017? I can't imagine that the Italian team will be able to call on its heritage players given the timing of this year's fixtures.

No, this has nothing to do with the WC. The likes of Ireland, Wales and Lebanon will also have to qualify.

What has happened to Norway?

They're playing Denmark and Sweden in a Nordic Cup.

Following the organisation’s experiences in the competition, Rugby League Norge opted to concentrate on the Nordic Cup in 2014 while the Czechs will be joined by Malta and Greece in the 2014 Bowl.   http://www.rlef.eu.com/european_bowl

I may be biased, but this is wise.  It is worth noting that Norway came bottom in the Nordic Cup last year (including Denmark 60 Norway 10), so it is hardly the easy way out in playing terms.

It also provides games with greater public interest and less demanding logistics.

Given the recent political developments, it is very difficult to see how the Ukraine fixture on the 24th May can be successfully staged.

Good news, Germany would be good at league surely.

'2016' four nations will be good.  On the final day i would have the two losing teams play-off before the final at Wembley and introduce the return of the Big-Hit.

Rugby League in Germany is currently on its backside. I said in the past couple of years that things was not good and sadly its proved true. I dont find any happiness in telling things how they are. The good thing is the RLEF have finally seen things are not in order and changes have been made, especially regarding the Development Officer, who frankly has caused untold damage thats seen many walk away. Right now, Germany is in review of things and then plans can start to rebuild. The RLEF is right not to throw them in any comp as they need to sort some serious issues out that will hopefully see the game progress properly. Germany will play the Dutch on the 3rd May in Delft. There are other events happening in Germany, like a 9s. But for now atleast thats not being done under the RLD.

The European Championship B match between Ukraine and Russia, scheduled for Kharkiv on 24 May, has been switched to Russia due to the ongoing political crisis in Ukraine.

Kharkiv is the headquarters of the Ukrainian Rugby League Federation (UFRL) but there is presently no stable municipal authority with the power to guarantee the safety of the participants and spectators.

Considering that national elections are due to take place on 25 May, and following consultations with the UFRL and the Russian Association of Rugby League Clubs, the Rugby League European Federation has switched the match to Naro-Fominsk in Russia on the same date.

The 2015 reverse fixture will now take place in Ukraine.

Ukraine’s home match against Italy, on 5 July, is still scheduled for Kharkov until further notice.
