Leigh Miners picked up their third win of the season yesterday afternoon when they beat Hunslet Warriors 38-14 at Twist Lane, the victory being dedicated to Miners legend and inaugural hall of fame member Bob Dowling who sadly passed away on Friday. It was the home side who made the brighter start and where in front after only a couple of minutes when the outstanding Lee Gittins who on his return to the side from injury scored out wide on the right to give the score 4-0. Hunslet responded on ten minutes with a try from their full back Gary McClelland but Miners hit back immediately with a try from Shaun Dowie out wide on the left to make it 8-4. Dowie scored his second of the game with just short of half an hour played to open up an eight point gap but that was narrowed back down to four a few minutes later when Warriors captain Caldon Bravo scored his sides second try to make it 12-8. Just before the break Miners hit the Warriors with a quick fire double with the first coming from the excellent Australian Shaun Dowie who grabbed a first half hat-trick with another try out on the left, Kieran Eccleston landing his first conversion off the day to give the score 18-8. The second try was scored right on half time from Scott O'Brien who spotted a gap in the Warriors defence to go in at the side of the posts, Eccleston adding the extras to open up a sixteen point advantage going into the interval leading 24-8.
Miners continued from where they left off at the end of the first half after the restart with an early quick fire double to take the game away from Hunslet, Scott O'Brien scoring his second of the game followed by a try in the right corner from young winger Jake Waterworth after a break from Lee Gittins, Eccleston converting the O'Brien try to put Miners in command leading 34-8. The score stayed like that until the seventieth minute when winger Jack Probert scored an eighth home try to make it 38-8 before the visitors scored a consolation try from Daryl Gaunt late on, Nathan Kitson converting to give the final score 38-14.
Next week Miners are away at Wath Brow Hornets.
