Tigers U19’s continue to emulate the first team start to the season, as they continued their great start to progress and make it “four from six”, with 22-12 victory over Wakefield Wildcats on Saturday afternoon at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium.

A tense affair throughout, the Tigers remained in control and turned the screw in the final quarter to see off the home side.

Ryan Sheridan’s men found themselves trailing after fifteen minutes when the Wildcats were awarded a penalty deep in Tigers territory and capitalised to break the deadlock and score a converted try.

A penalty awarded to the Tigers on the half hour mark, quickly saw them take control. Lively Danny Sowerby asked questions of the Wildcats defence with his quick footwork on the last tackle, and earned the penalty for a high shot. The Tigers charged into the home side’s defenders and Brad Day wrestled over (pictured) from close range under the posts. Jordan Howden added the conversion.

With time running out on the first half, the Tigers swung the pendulum firmly in their favour when a break from deep in their half by Liam Blockley as he raced down the left hand touchline evading several would-be tacklers enroute to the try line, but the scrambling home side defence slowed his progress, but the Tigers go-forward continued and hooker Tom Holmes shifted the ball wide left to winger Connor Hugh’s who dived in at the corner. Howden failed with the touchline conversion attempt, and the Tigers went in at the break 10-6 up.

For a short time at the second half both sides partially cancelled each other out, until the pressure of the Tigers defenders forced a dropped ball, and Holmes was on hand to quickly kick clear from deep in the visiting half, re-gather the loose ball and race clear from 60 meters with olympian speed leaving the chasing tacklers in his wake, and score under the posts. Howden added the conversion and the Tigers never looked back.

The Tigers continued to camp out on the Wildcats tryline and built pressure, and broke through again when Sowerby’s high kick on the last was palmed-back inside, through the acrobats of winger Hugh’s to his centre Blockley who crossed out wide. Howden was again successful with his conversion.

The home side gained extra possession when the Tigers knocked on coming back out of back play, and scored a converted try which proved to be a late consolation at the death.

The Tigers U19’s Academy are next in action this coming Thursday 24th April, when they entertain Warrington Wolves at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle, Kick Off 1930Hrs.
