Barrow Raiders 10 Doncaster RLFC 22

Craven Park, Barrow.

Sunday 08 June 2014.

Barrow: Shaw, Platt, Wiper, Grant, Speakman, Goulding, Burke, Mossop, Jones, Harrison, Briscoe, Toal. Subs: Lloyd, Campbell, Butler, Bullock.

Doncaster: Scott, Morrison, Whiting, Welham, Hodson, Cooke, Wilkinson, Carbutt, Kesik, Robinson, Kent, Starling, Emmett. Subs: Spaven, Snitch, Spiers, Colbon.

Doncaster completed their first double of the Kingstone Press Championship season with a hard fought victory against Barrow in a game overshadowed by controversy.

The Dons were almost gifted a try inside two minutes after being awarded a penalty due to Barrow being offside at the kick-off, Mike Emmett went close but was held up over the line.

Doncaster took first blood though, Liam Kent kicked to the corner and Nev Morrison collected and scored to give the Dons an early lead. Scott was unlucky to see his conversion go just wide.

The Dons almost extended their lead when Craig Robinson made super break and offloaded to Paul Cooke, he chipped through for the chasing Hodson, but his kick was just too long and bounced into touch.

Inside 20 minutes Cooke forced a drop out with a neat kick and Doncaster took advantage of the field position when Richard Wilkinson superbly dummied and darted for the line, sliding over for the Dons second try. Scott made no mistake with the kick this time to give Doncaster a 0-10 lead.

Barrow found a way back into the game though when Doncaster were penalised for offside. Bobbie Goulding kicked to touch with a great kick, giving the home side possession 30 metres out. The Raiders took full advantage, when Goulding spread the ball out wide to Max Wiper, who passed inside to Dalton Grant who skipped his way through to score. Ryan Shaw added the extras to reduced the deficit to four points.

After the break the Dons were awarded a penalty when Goulding penalised for bad mouthing the linesman, giving Doncaster a chance to really press the Barrow line and take the initiative in the game, however the home side held strong and Grant intercepted a lose ball by kicking it on down the field, in a foot race between Scott, he kicked again, before Alex Starling dived on the lose ball.

The game continued to be tense, with just a try between the two sides, Doncaster continued to press, but when really applying pressure on the Barrow line just after the hour mark, Scott and Cooke were penalised for crossing.

Barrow conceded a penalty when Paul Cooke who kicked on the last tackle was taken out without the ball. The Dons now 10 metres out pressed, but Barrow survived once more when Emmett was held up over the line.

In the 70th minute the Dons pressure finally paid off, Cooke chipped through for Liam Welham and the ball bounced up perfectly for the centre to score. Scott slotted the conversion to give Doncaster a 6-14 advantage.

The Dons were awarded yet another penalty because of Goulding’s dissent, this time the Barrow player coach was unhappy the Dons were awarded a scrum. Cooke’s side took full advantage, kicking down field and Liam Colbon on dual registration from Hull FC burst over to score from close range. Scott was successful with the conversion as Doncaster looked to seal the win and deny the home side a bonus point.

After the restart both teams were reduced to 12 men when Dan Toal and Emmett were sent to the sin bin as tempers flared.

It was the home side though who came back strong and Ian Mort made a superb break and scored in the left corner to give Barrow a bonus point.

However ugly scenes followed, as the home side were celebrating, Goulding ran to the touch line and continued his on-going argument with the linesman before really getting up in his face and squaring up to him, leaving referee Gareth Hewer no option but to brandish a red card.

Following the incident Shaw failed with the conversion as the referee blew for full time, with shock still around the ground at what had just happened.
