I suppose it needs a thread, despite being considerably less bodacious than last year's fabulous Rugby League version. ;) Just a heads-up - there's a "no commentary option" via the rd button for the current match between Colombia and Greece.

The 'no commentary' thing is something the BBC have occasionally done before. It allows you to crank the volume and really get a buzz from the crowd noise. Mind you, yesterday, they were offering 'Radio 1 commentary' as the red button option.

It seems to me that the team that can con the most free kicks out if the ref will win the tournament.

How dare you impugn the good names of Blatter, Platini and Dastardly! I am outraged! Outraged, I tell you!

I'm actually going to watch tonight's game...

1:0 to Italy already with the national anthems.

Phil Neville has to have the most boring voice in TV commentary.  He should be doing snooker commentary...

This has been rather good, but in the England goal celebrations, their physio has dislocated his ankle. Painful!

From what I saw...pretty good performance from England. Far better than I expected. Can't stand Italy when it comes to football. ..always disliked them since I was young.

Italy actually played a positive, attacking style - quite unlike them.

For Italy, it was. That's not saying much though. Can't stop, I am off out to smash up a local Italian restaurant by way of retribution.

England are still in a better position than the current world champions!

Rooney was abysmal today, completely agree with Shearer. Though so was Baines, can't believe I'm wishing Ca$hley went instead and Henderson. Bring in Barkley, Lallana, Shaw and Lambert for the Uruguay game, but I can't see Woy dropping 'golden boy'.

I'll tell you how limited my knowledge of football is nowadays, I know Rooney/Gerrard( and apart from Jack Wilshire..who I have only *heard* of, I only knew of Daniel Sturridge because of that Subway advert....possibly someone else who i have forgotten but that's better IMO than the 2002 'We're going to win' approach.

I actually enjoyed watching the England team last night. 2nd half a bit sloppy but it was the most attacking ive seen us.

Rooney was poor last night bar the quality cross for Sturridge's goal. He had one clear real chance and fluffed it; compare that to Balotelli who buried his only chance. As Shearer stated, that is the difference at this level; world class players take their chances at this level and Rooney has proved once again he isn't up to scratch. Those calling for him to be played more centrally including Graham Taylor and Rio Ferdinand need their heads testing when you consider how well Sturridge and Sterling played.

I think you are over critical of Baines. Whilst not being great, that was a result of him being isolated in the first half due to Rooney's poor attempts to fill in the hole in front and a similar incident for the second goal when Welbeck was lazy and never cut down the space in front of Baines.
