According to news reports, a Qatari Airbus passenger plane is suspected of carrying an explosive device or potentially bearing  a terrorist target. It has been escorted to Manchester Airport by the RAF and specialist teams await its arrival. All flights in and out of Manchester have been diverted to Leeds Bradford Airport.

Why didn't they just divert the airliner to land at a little-used RAF base?

Sneaky suspicion most RAF bases wouldn't have a runway long enough for a passenger jet other than Brize Norton and St Athan.

There's a photo taken by a passenger showing the RAF fighter out of the window of the aircraft.

I personally would not want to see that.
