It is something I'd like to dabble in, but the light pollution in suburban London would make buying a telescope utterly pointless. But Patrick Moore got my mum incredibly drunk once, if that's any help...

Don't look at the sun.

It may be brighter than you think.

Don't look at readers of The Sun.

They may be dimmer than you can imagine...

Some good responses so far! :)

I got a telescope for Christmas. I haven't managed to use it much at all yet other than set it up and look at the moon; epic view of it! Hopefully get some clear nights when up at the house over Easter and figure out how to use it properly...

If you can pack them multiple lenses in your carry on luggage, come over here to the Pyrenees.  Just about no light pollution and on a clear night, when puddled, I frequently fall over watching the incredible light show above.

I've got one of those new fangled apps that tells me which bit is which in the heavens, but the sheer volume of stars often obscures the well known constellations.

Or it may just be the wine goggles.

1. Put Google Sky Maps on your smart phone https://www.google.com/sky/

2. Wrap up warm...fingerless gloves, woolly hat,

4. Load Stellarium on your PC. http://www.stellarium.org/en_GB/

4. When using yourscope, give yourself 30 mins or so for your eyes to accomodate to the darkness

I'd back up most of what JohnM says except of add don't use google sky maps on your phone during an observing session, it will kill your night vision.

And further add:

Plan your observing session in advance. Write it down and use a red torch t to read it if you forget (red doesn't kill your night vision)

Make sure your telescope has been outside about an hour when you start to observer. Then everything is the correct temperature, and there shouldn't be any condensation blocking your view.

Don't always look directly at faint objects like nebulae. Your peripheral vision is more light sensitive. This sounds odd but once you've got say, the Orion nebula in view try looking just to the side. You'll pick up more detail.

I know you say you've got a telescope and that's great but never underestimate the power of binoculars, especially image stabilised ones.

Also I'm going to re-emphasis JohnM's point. Join a local society. It might sound odd but it really is better with other people involved and they'll all be happy to help and offer advise.

Some impressive stuff on there.

How do you know him though?, there are some snaps of the sun so he must live in Yorkshire somewhere?

If you have clear skies (and in a dark place!) look North and up. Big solar storm in progress so northern lights are in action.

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

Apparently everyone in Yorkshire is staying in doors tomorrow as someone posted on facebook that watching the eclipse was a chargeable event. They're all hoping to come out and watch the free repeat in the evening.
