UAE, Spain & South Africa bid for 2021 World Cup

If they maintain the North/South rotation, South Africa is out.

Usually with these types of comps, the home team is an automatic qualifier but, UAE could opt out of this, improving their chances.

None of those time zones really suit the AUS/NZ TV market but that could be partly fixed by scheduling of matches.

Spain would be the most likely to draw a lot of RL tourists.

Spain already has the facilities, as does Sth Africa. UAE would spend whatever it took to build the facilities.

As automatic qualifiers, if that applies, would Spain do better than Sth Africa? Spain is currently ranked 28, Sth Africa 31.

I've reached the conclusion that I don't know.

Please, just ask yourselves if England could by, any stretch of the mind, host a succefull floorball or handball world cup.

Then, for the love of god, just let's move on.

We've managed to host very successful WCs in sports less entertaining than those.

All of these hosts sound a little fanciful for me apart from perhaps the UAE where if they get the right backing the government may pump a fair amount of money into the event and there are already a fair number of expats from Oz and England.

South Africa as far as I can tell has a tiny following of League when compared to Union. It's also a long way to travel for most fans and I can't see the government giving much backing to such a small minority sport there.

Spain really is the most absurd though as hasn't their governing body only been set up fairly recently so I do not see how they could have the resources to go about organising. It would also be the most reliant on travelling fans as they couldn't get as many interested Union fans like in SA. Rugby union wouldn't even consider having a WC here any time soon and we've got a far longer history in Spain than league.

It sounds to me that many of these countries are just trying to get their names out in the rugby league world so that they can get more media coverage which is never a bad thing. Though we used to think the same of Russia applying for every Union event before they some how got the 7s RWC and really messed that up.

Wouldn't the most sensible option for a League WC in 2021 be taking the WC back to France and properly investing in a tournament there as the game has declined there since the first WC was hosted there. There is a native support there but with there still being great opportunities to expand. Maybe they should target areas away from the traditional rugby playing south in a future WC.

The UK did manage to host a successful Olympic handball competition - plenty of tickets sold.

Bon dia! Estic bé, i tu? Si ha passat temps a Catalunya, suposo que parles Catala una mica. També soc de Barcelona. Espero que tot anirà bé per a tu :)

Unfortunately, our game has no base in Barcelona, only in Valencia and Madrid (a bit in Andalusia too).

England hosted the Olympic handball and did very well.  So, yes.  It also was a great launch pad for handball in the UK, which previously had not really existed.  What made the difference was political will to make it work.  There are serious players involved in the South African bid, if it does have political backing, it could work extremely well.

The UAE were clearly serious enough to get the soccer world cup, if they are serious about the RL world cup they could certainly get and host it.  Also, the bribe would keep the RFL going for years.

Spain is more doubtful.

If we're talking bribes, maybe we should tap up R*ss*a and Q*t*r... ;)

Is it the 2020 European Championships in football that is being hosted in many nations?

I think this could work for rl.

We could alternate between Europe and Australasia.

England, France, Spain and Dubai could all host groups and a quarter each for example, then semis and final in France and England.

It is pribably the only realistic way we can stage the tournament in some of these places.

Bon dia! Parlo Catala un moltes mica... :) Pero entiendo mas por eso me entiendes. Donde en Barcelona vivas? La novia viva en los muntanyas circa Badalona en un pueblo se llama Tiana. Conceces?

Right best speak in English as my Spanish grammar is appalling having never spoken the language since 2005! Here's hoping the game does expand into the Barcelona area and gains a small foothold; I'd be tempted to move back and take up a bit of coaching once my current career finishes!

Dubai to host the World Cup Qualifier between Lebanon and South Africa

http://www.thenational.ae/sport/rugby/uae-rugby-league-to-host-its-first-international-fixture-in-october

extract from that article:

"The UAERF had also hoped to enter a side in a three-team, Middle East and Africa (MEA) qualifying competition for the right to take the eight berth at the 2017 tournament in Australia and New Zealand."

Assuming they mean 8th, don't they mean 16th?

This is what I was thinking of, a Europe-wide competition in the same vein. Games out for tender, chances to spread the sport but a fair few games in strongholds of UK and France.

There are 7 nations automatically qualified. The European qualifiers aren't until 2016, and I'm not sure about the Americas or Pacific ones, so chronologically, they would be the 8th
