Keighley Cougars 23-22 North Wales Crusaders Match Report by Joshua Chapman (@JRCSport)

The Cougars kept up their unbeaten start to the League One campaign in dramatic circumstances against the North Wales Crusaders.

Just moments after the visitors had converted a penalty for what they believed to have won them a point, Danny Jones slotted over a drop goal from thirty metres after the hooter to snatch Keighley the most dramatic of victories.

Paul March was pleased that his side managed to grind out the dramatic late victory despite being on the back foot for much of the first half.

“I thought we started the game well and the momentum changed from which they scored three quick tries and deserved their half team lead.

“But we put the practices we talk about in training and before games into our performance and grinded out the win, even if it did have to wait until the last kick of the game.

“We head to London Skolars next week, which is another long trip, but we’ll be playing on a 4G pitch again and we like those sort of surfaces as we showed up at Newcastle last weekend.

“There was an incident placed on report shortly after half time which Dave (March) received an elbow to the face, of course I took that personally.

“Performances like these do come at a cost though, we’ve lost Matt Bailey to an ankle injury in the warm-up and will be going to hospital for X-Rays as is Danny Lawton who has torn his bicep.”

Cougars took the lead initially when Paul Handforth weaved through three attempted tackles.

Crusaders levelled when Penny took a Jono Smith short offload and raced 50 metres to score under the posts.

They grabbed a second as Jamie Dallimore’s kick was taken by Rob Massam to give the Wrexham based outfit the lead.

Crusaders spell of dominance came to an end when a space was left open in the defensive line allowing Smith to flop over the line despite the referee, Jamie Bloem, missing two clear forward passes in the build-up.

Bloem disallowed two Keighley tries prior to the interval with Lawton’s effort ruled out for offside before Ash Lindsay’s was ruled as held up by the referee despite grounding the ball.

Following the break, Keighley looked fired up and this showed after 90 seconds when David March received an elbow to the face which led to the incident being placed on report after a minor scuffle.

Handforth dribbled the ball 30 metres to touch down for his second off the afternoon yet a Tommy Johnson penalty appeared to put daylight between the sides.

Andy Gabriel closed the gap to four with his first professional try after the young winger raced 40 metres following a James Feather break.

Handforth then thought he had won the game when he fought over for a hat-trick after Cougars were awarded a penalty for not releasing after the held call.

From the restart though, Penny won the ball from the short kick off and fell victim to a high tackle from which Johnson converted to level the scores and leave a sense of deflation around Cougar Park.

Then from a penalty, the hooter sounded and under immense pressure from two diving North Wales defenders, Danny Jones coolly put the one pointer over to seal the most dramatic of victories.
