Time to bring back Great Britain....yaaaaawwwwn!

Recommended Posts

Shenton on the cover of Rugby League World saying bring back GB, RL in Scotland and Ireland is almost non existent, Welsh rugby league clubs Crusaders and Scorpions are struggling to stay on their feet. It's basically gonna be England V Aus (If it happens). We need to develop the home nations first before bringing this concept forward.

Is this Nigel Wood's new brilliant idea after putting toulouse in Championship one?

I do wish people would let this go. It's becoming tedious.  Did people not notice that Scotland nearly voted for independence and that Wales has devolved government? The trend is now home nations, not one nation.  Develop Wales, give it support, and stick to England.  Ireland are trying to develop their own players and have secured funding from NI sports authorities to do so.  Scotland may be a dead duck but that doesn't mean we try to turn the clock back to a time that has now gone forever.

Why not wait to see what Shenton has to say on the subject first before jumping to conclusions?

My thoughts exactly when I see people on the forum wanting to close down debate without being prepared to even read what someone else has to say on a subject.

If the impression that Shenton is pro-Great Britain was not the one the editor of RLW wanted to give then another headline should have been used.  I can't think of anything new that can be said on this subject which hasn't been said countless times before.

Just because you can't think of anything new to say doesn't mean no one else can. Honestly!

The thoughts of a current England international on the international game, eh? Who'd want to give that a hearing? Not the self-appointed gurus of TRL, it seems.

You make some good points but 2 years ago nearly 400,000 people watched the British & Irish Lions in Australia so to say the trend isn't one nation doesn't always apply.

Was that kind of response really necessary?

The reason I can't think of anything new to say is because I am widely read and so have come across every shade of opinion on this matter over the years I've been a rugby league fan.

I'm interested in reading the thoughts of lots of people: international players, non-international players and non-players included.  I just don't think Shenton's input will include anything new given the number of players and non-players who have provided their opinions on this subject over the years (namely, ever since GB was replaced with England!).

I watched TeamGB in the Olympics in 2012 too.  However, that doesn't mean that GB is relevant to professional rugby league in 2015.  Nor does it mean that the trend isn't towards home nations.

Danny Brough tho

I'd personally love to see Australia v Great Britain and Danny Brough in the halves with Widdop, Also wouldn't mind seeing Daryl Powell coaching that side but that's not really my business is it.

Yes, I think my response was necessary, quite frankly.

You want to shut down a debate just because someone may disagree with your world view. Tough!

The argument that no one is interested in this issue isn't borne out by the numbers of people currently reading this thread.

So you're just having a go at me then?  After all, I wasn't the only one on this thread whose response was not ticking the enthusiastic box!

And I have no desire to 'shut down' any debate.  I expressed my own opinion, which I thought I was allowed to do.  Others can - and have - challenged it already John.

And I didn't say that nobody was interested in the subject.  Clearly some people are, like Michael Shenton!  Unless he was used as a front for someone else's opinion.  Please don't put words into my mouth (or through my fingers, whichever) just to suit your agenda.  I am entitled to be exasperated by the frequent revisits to this tiresome subject just as others are entitled to be frustrated that we still play as England.

Now that I've mentioned him I think a halves combo of Tomkins and Widdop with Hardaker at full back would be erection-worthy so perhaps home nations will have to be the way.

@ohcallicalli

You can't beat an owl!

I'm having a go at no one. Just taking issue with those who have jumped to conclusions about an article in a magazine that they haven't actually read yet.

Michael Shenton is a front for no ones opinion but his own. What a ridiculous suggestion. He writes his own column for the mag. He is a very intelligent, articulate individual with a great deal of integrity.

Awful journalism pushing a non-progressive agenda? About par for the course in RL TBH.

Translation: "Someone appears to hold an opinion I may not share so I'll dismiss it out of hand without even bothering to read it first."

I see the front page of this issue of RLW also prominently features a negative opinion about the marquee player rule. Awaiting the next issue featuring Garry Schofield moaning about the bluddy French teams.

So you want to read a mag that's just full of RFL press releases and everyone agreeing with each other? Wow.

Maybe you should actually read what Ryan Hall has to say on the subject. Again, like Michael Shenton, he is a very intelligent, articulate individual with a great deal of integrity, and holds an informed opinion on a subject that will have a direct impact on his profession. But hey, who the hell's interested in that!!??

I'm happy to debate issues and listen to contrary opinion, that doesn't change the fact that this issue of RLW is covered in Sun-esque anti-progressive headlines designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator. I understand that you're trying to sell magazines and this has got people talking, and sadly the kind of opinions published on the front page will probably appeal to a lot of fans. That doesn't mean it's integrous journalism though.
