Playing budgets

Well marketram has mentioned Workington quite a few times in his posts so I think it's time we put him right on one or two points.

"Workington are not short of a bob or two" - Oh if only that were true.    We run a squad of about 24 players and 23 of them are either Cumbrian or live here so when we play away we travel as a group and every away game is a costly business, in fact I would say what we spend on travelling each season would comfortable pay for two or three players for the M62 clubs.    We got our best ever sponsorship deal from Zebra Claims this season but most of that went on bringing over two players from Australia (Fifita and Horton) and housing them and their families.   To date we haven't had the best of returns on that investment but we live in hopes.    Four of our squad were only signed this season from the Cumbrian Amateur game and obviously are still getting used to the move up.    Take out injured players and yes, we do sometimes rely on one or two players from Wigan but very rarely get players for the positions we need cover for.

Over the season we have had 12 players from Wigan who have filled 34 places out of a possible 323 available in our 19 matches.    You picked out Ryan Hampshire but do you know how many games he has actually played for Town this season?    He played 1 match at home to Sheffield at the start of the season.    Lewis Tierney (10 games) has played most games of the Wigan players for us and most of them have been out of position on the wing.   We haven't had the best of deals with Wigan as they frequently name players we are getting, who then get named in our match-day 19 players but then we find the day before the game one or two have been withdrawn back to Wigan.

I remember when .............................

"It is impossible not to feel a twinge of sympathy for Workington Town, the fall guys this season for the Super League's determination to retain it's European dimension, in the shape of Paris. While the French have had every assistance to survive, the importance of having a flagship in a heartland area like West Cumbria has been conveniently forgotten." - Dave Hadfield - Independent 25th August 1996.

Don't dispute some of the things you say about travel etc, but there isn't another way round that.

But you can't say money is tight after you've signed Jarrod Sammut. He won't be cheap.

But as for d/r and you touched on Wigan sending players in positions you don't really need. Why do you play them then?

For example Lloyd has played a few games for yous this season, and Oliver Gildart played once or twice hasn't he?

This then leaves players that you signed, own and pay to sit in the stands or play out of position. (Don't start a debate about centres and second rowers are same nowadays please)

And you don't run a reserves, so how can these local lads play and settle in when they don't play because a Wigan player is in front of them.

And Hampshire only playing once really backs up my point. d/r was set up to help young talent in SL play competitive rugby constantly after the abolishment of the reserves in SL.

You should either have him for a month or don't have him at all. If I was your full back (is it Jack Murphy) I'd be pretty annoyed thinking is Wigan going to send Hampshire down this week? Am I gonna play? Murphy was let go by Wigan, probably having déjà vu is the poor kid.

I'm sure Workington aren't rolling in money , but to be able to bring over 2 overseas players , sort out the visas , pay for the families to come over and house them and of course pay the players. That would indicate WT aren't that short , most of the league probably couldnt afford to do that.

As I have said sponsorship money was used to bring over 2 aussies. And again we have only signed Sammut until the end of the season courtesy of another sponsor so the club don't have "a Bob or two" far from it.

We run the size of squad we can afford which as I said is around 24 strong. Four of those are straight out of the amateur ranks then when we pick up injuries we need bodies to put 17 out on the pitch. To say Murphy gets moved to accommodate Hampshire is a bit misleading when its only happened once. Tierney is also a fullback but he has played on the wing with Murphy still at FB.

Most Town fans are fed up with DR to be honest but we would have struggled without them on several occasions.

I wasn't suggesting you have a Shiehk running the club just saying you're budget (the topic here) is bigger than many would expect or suggest. And your mention of sponsors all falls under the same bracket as clubs finances. And FairPlay to securing these sponsors

I'd imagine there is quite a few clubs who would like to be in that position of not having a Bob or 2 and then sign those 3 players. Can't see the logic Keith , I think Hunslet had the lowest spend on players this season. Where do you think town are in terms of spending on players mid table ?

I'm not having a go , as has just been said if you get the sponsorship and players to come well done. Just that relative to other clubs Town have a bit of money.

Without the Aussies and Sammut I would put us in the lower reaches but because we were fortunate to get the sponsorship for those 3 then yes, I put us about mid-way in that particular table.   With having basically a local based team we don't have the extra costs that our neighbours have bringing players from out of the county for training and matches, etc.    Daft as it is with Murphy being our only traveller it helps him if there is someone coming from Wigan as he gets a travelling companion!!!!!

Of all the teams it is Whitehaven that use more players from other clubs than anyone else. Last Sunday, for example, of the starting 13 that hammered Donny no fewer than 6 of them were from other clubs. They had Jouffret and Sigismeau from Catalans, Taylor on loan from Halifax, Beaumont on loan from Leigh and Gore & Chapelhow on DR from Widnes. Plus Phil Joseph on DR from Widnes on the bench.

I’m not prejudiced, I hate everybody equally

I hope this isn't going to start a big argument about who's got the hardest dad between Worky and Haven fan's!

Or you could ask why they have 7 players from other clubs when the limit is 5...........

jouf and sigi are signed haven players Derwent,I know some of you seem to struggle to grasp that but there you go,we have two loans a system available to everyone ,and 3 DR players one who is 19the other 22 and being released by Widnes. As you were so fond of saying last season thems the rules. If we were really fielding 7 when your only allowed 5 the eel would be on to it as that's the reason you have to submit squads 48 hrs before games so they can check and stop a repeat of last season's debacle

No, what I struggle to grasp is why Coyle said in his radio interview on Sunday that Catalans were happy that you are giving THEIR players game time. And why the Catalans club refer to them as "our players" on their website. I struggle to grasp how players can apparently have 2 contracts at different clubs - maybe you could explain how this is possible except under a loan arrangement ?

Simple signed short term contracts with us and will re-sign for cats at the end of our season,in normal circumstances this could be risky as another club could come in and poach them, but as joufs dad is CEO of Catalan then no chance of that happening, both will be Catalan players again at the end of the season. Also as the RFL have approved our match day squad for the last 3 weeks and jouf and sigismeau have been in all 3 squads ,then that tells you all you should need to know. But hey if it takes your mind of your current plight so be it

So just say a club came in & wanted to sign them players immediately who'd get the transfer fee?

like I posted it's a none starter as the lads dad is CEO of Catalans and apart from his obvious loyalty to them,I'm sure they will be a u understanding they resign for them when our season is over
